What's the point of having a guideline if a user is allowed to completely ignore it? Specifically the one: "Help" KudoZ should be used for requesting terms help only after other resources have been exhausted.

In recent times, I've been watching a specific user post a series of trivial questions which Google Translate effectively answers. This is within the Rules and is left unaddressed.

To me at least, it seems a strange reason to discontinue membership, especially as the site offers you specific tools to address this if it offends you that much, e.g. voting for a question to be regraded as Non-Pro or filtering out questions from specific askers.

From the dashboard, you can also elect to have no notification of KudoZ questions at all or receive only those in your specialist subjects etc.

Personally, what I pay for is the Blue Board, help and information from the forums and forum archives and the terminology search facility amongst various other benefits.

I hope you change your mind.

Absolutely, but site staff could. However, this user has recently been allowed to change their username (presumably so that people like me, who used to avoid them, might start answering again - something I did until I realized they were a re-incarnation). I feel very let-down by this.

Thanks Russell, I appreciate that but it's very unlikely.

filter this asker Apr 20, 2014

You can filter certain askers, so you never see their questions again. That's what I do.

No one is forced to answer them--you can just ignore the questions. As to Google translate--you must be kidding me. Which professional translator would resort to Google translate, or other MT even out of utter desperation.

What professional translator would need to ask 5,850 questions?

I agree that people like this are idiots who are abusing ProZ, but that's no reason to cancel your membership. It's like saying there are racists and bigots online, so I'm going to stop using the internet.

Thanks Phil. My take on this is that action will only be taken when ProZ see that they are losing money. So my non-renewal will document a breakeven situation.

Mind you, Apr 20, 2014

5,850 questions must be a ProZ record. Maybe they should receive some kind of (heavily ironic) award. And I don't know who you're referring to, but I bet you anything they've never answered a question themselves.

Now I know who you're talking about, Apr 20, 2014

and I was being COMPLETELY unfair. She answered a couple of questions back in November. So congratulations, You-Know-Who-You Are, for proving that all take, almost no-give crowdsourcing is a viable business model.

Just hide her from your list of askers, as I did long ago. You'll miss her for a few days, but in the long term it'll work wonders for your blood pressure.

1. Baby & bathwater; 2. how to filter Apr 20, 2014

1. Terminating Proz membership for this reason seems to me to be analogous to throwing out the baby with the bathwater. I suspect it's likely to solve a little problem (receiving unwanted notifications of questions) and, in the process, create a bigger one (no benefits of Proz membership).

2. Never having used it, I searched and finally found how to filter questions from an asker. It's actually quite easy - make sure you're logged in first:

2. Never having used it, I searched and finally found how to filter questions from an asker. It's actually quite easy - make sure you're logged in first:
Either:
Hover the mouse pointer over your name at the top of a Proz web page, click on Kudoz Settings in the menu that drops down from this
or:
From the menu that drops down from "Terminology" (in the list Home, Terminology, Jobs & Directories ...", click on "My settings".

Then, select the "Asker flags and filters" tab. Then the process is self-explanatory.
I assume that it affects only email notifications of Kudoz questions (which I don't use) and all applicable questions will still be there when you look at Kudoz > Answer questions.

If you don't have Kudoz notifications switched on in the first place, you won't receive all those notification emails, and you may think this is a good or a bad thing.

6904 (at the moment/second) may be the current record. Asker displays a certified pro badge.

Thanks Oliver. I thought I'd filtered this user before, but perhaps not. I came across what seemed like a new user, answered a few questions and then casually looked at their profile. It looked familiar, so I checked a bit more and found that it was a new ID for a user who had drawn a lot of negative comment in the past.

In my book, the site staff are allowing a breach of Rule 7 "Creating a new profile to bypass restrictions or gain advantages is prohibited." because I reported the issue and was told that no rules are being broken. Obviously, they see it differently and I'm not (and don't want to be) an expert on the minutiae of the rules.

But I believe the only thing that even might result in any action is a loss of site revenue. So I've decided that ProZ and I will go our separate ways - I'll still answer questions as a non-member of course.

I forgot about the name change of this notorious serial abuser Apr 20, 2014

I've just removed an answer that I posted to one of the questions in her latest flurry.

I have no plans to cancel my membership, and I don't intend to waste time in an umpteenth fruitless discussion of the issue of Kudoz abuse, but I do think it a shame that the site chooses to do nothing about the issue other than offer an "ignore" option.

Yes, discussion is fruitless. I'll look again when renewal time comes up - much more in hope than expectation
