English term

stove

Non-PRO English to Hindi Other Furniture / Household Appliances
This word means an apparatus, usually of metal and heated by gas, electricity, oil, or solid fuel, for cooking food.
1. Can I translate this term as स्टोव___sTova? For example, in the sentence "How does this gas stove work?" Is it understandable in India?
2. Can I use this term also for the translation of the word combination "kerosene stove" (किरोसीन का स्टोव___kirosina kaa sTova)?

Discussion

C.M. Rawal Oct 23, 2007:
A stove is a heating apparatus used for cooking but it does not include a cooker.
Ruchi Agarwal Oct 23, 2007:
The english word stove has same meaning in hindi too as it is in English and we normally use transliteration of this word that is स्टोव this only has become popular in Hindi too, So in English you call it 'stove' and in Hindi ,you can call it 'sTov' 'स्टो
swetlanka (asker) Oct 23, 2007:
Sorry. I don't understand you :-) I've asked about a device or a thing that can be called स्टोव in India . Is it the same divice that is meant by "stove" in English? Or is it something else?
Arun Singh Oct 23, 2007:
A transliteration of English word "Stove".
swetlanka (asker) Oct 23, 2007:
And what kind of devices is the word स्टोव used for?
Arun Singh Oct 23, 2007:
If am correct, "चूल्हा" is used for any heat generating device used for cooking. A device which uses coal is called "अंगीठी". gas, solar, electric, kerosene are means of producing heat.
C.M. Rawal Oct 23, 2007:
No, that is not right. - C.M. Rawal
swetlanka (asker) Oct 23, 2007:
Am I right to suppose that I can use the word स्टोव when speaking about gas or electric cooker?

स्टोव

स्टोव और किरोसीन का स्टोव दोनों प्रयोग ठीक हैं. भारत में ये दोनों शब्द बहुत अधिक प्रचलित हैं. किरोसीन के स्टोव को मिट्टी के तेल का स्टोव भी कहते हैं.
Example sentence:

सनफ्लेम ने भारतीय रसोई की जरूरतों को ध्यान में रखते हुए गैस स्टोव की नई रेंज निकाली है.

मिट्टी के तेल से जलने वाला स्टोव देवता बन गया उन दिनों।

स्टोव

स्टोव is the correct translation for this term because kerosene stove is the one that works with kerosene oil not with gas or electricity.

You can not use the word स्टोव for gas or electric cooker, as stove is something on which u prepare food something like cooking range, but cooker is a kind of vessel in which the food is prepared.
