No Clinton here La razón por la que no he planteado contexto es porque en la novela que estoy traduciendo la frase surge de la nada, sin estar integrada en ningún diálogo y sin pista alguna acerca del tema al que podría hacer referencia. De ahí mi supuesto de que se trataba de una frase hecha que posiblemente tendría una correspondencia en español que desconozco. Como explicaba en mi pregunta, creo entender su significado, sugería una traducción y esperaba que los conocimientos de mis colegas pudieran mejorarla. No pretendía, ni jamás ha sido mi intención, hacer perder el tiempo a nadie.

I'm thinking Bill Clinton here but with this total lack of context anything is speculation. It seems to me a total waste of time to try and answer this question without knowing the context. Total utter waste. It certainly isn't a frase hecha I've heard of outside the delectable Monica.

Casi...pero cerca!/pero no hay premio!

Es una frase tan comun que no necesita contexto alguno, pero aun siendo tan comun, no se me ocurre nada mejor. Que horror! Supongo que en algún lugar angloparlante regalaban puros como premio ;)
