Québec, le lundi 12 décembre 2011, 9 h 30 • À l’issus d’une étude internationale dont l’Institut faisait partie, les représentants des médias ont pu assister en direct ce matin à une intervention à l’aide de la thermoplastie bronchique Alair 1, un traitement non-pharmacologique pour les patients asthmatiques. Les patients sur place ont témoigné des avantages de cette technologie médicale. L’Institut universitaire de cardiologie et de pneumologie de Québec (IUCPQ) est le premier centre hospitalier au Canada à offrir aux patients asthmatiques le traitement par thermoplastie bronchique.
L’étude internationale RISA2, qui a débuté il y a cinq ans, a démontré le maintien d’une fonction pulmonaire stable et l’absence de complication clinique. Les résultats ont été présentés le 27 septembre 2011 lors du congrès de la European Respiratory Society (ERS)3 à Amsterdam par le docteur Michel Laviolette, pneumologue à l’Institut universitaire de cardiologie et de pneumologie de Québec. « Les données cliniques se rapportant à la thermoplastie bronchique continuent d’appuyer ce traitement prometteur, ce qui suscite un réel enthousiasme dans le milieu médical », a déclaré le docteur Laviolette, investigateur principal de l’essai RISA. « Les données probantes actuellement disponibles indiquent un bénéfice significatif à long terme, et les résultats de l’essai RISA confirment clairement la sécurité à long terme de ce traitement. La thermoplastie bronchique nous offre une nouvelle option dans le traitement des patients atteints d’asthme grave, laquelle permet de réduire les consultations à l’hôpital, les coûts à la charge des patients et la perte de journées de travail en raison des symptômes de l’asthme ».

The Quebec Heart and Lung Institute: Canadian leader in the control of asthma using bronchial thermoplasty, a non-pharmacological treatment for asthmatic patients.
Quebec, Monday December 12, 2011, 9:30 am • After completion of an international study involving the institute, media representatives were able to witness live this morning a bronchial thermoplasty intervention with Alair 1 , a non-pharmacological treatment for asthmatic patients. The patients on site voiced their opinions on the advantages of this medical technology. The Quebec heart and lung institute (QHLI) is the first healthcare center in Canada to offer a bronchial thermoplasty treatment to asthmatic patients.
The International Study RISA2, which was initiated five years ago, has demonstrated the maintenance of stable pulmonary function in the absence of clinical complication. The results were presented on September 27, 2011 at the European Respiratory Society (ERS)3 congress in Amsterdam by doctor Michel Laviolette, pneumologist at the Quebec heart and lung institute. “ The clinical data on bronchial thermoplasty continue to support this promissing treatment, giving rise to real enthusiasm in the medical community “, declared doctor Laviolette, principal investigator of the RISA trial. “ The evidence-based data currently available indicate a significant long-term benefit, and the results of the RISA trial clearly confirm the long-term safety of this treatment. Bronchial thermoplasty offers a new option for the treatment of patients with severe asthma, which allows a reduction of hospital consultations, patient-related costs, and missed work days for asthma symptoms “.
After a successful career as Lead Investigator in Medical and Pharmaceutical Research, and producing a 300-page book on Drug Discovery and Clinical Trials (Co-Author/Editor-in-Chief; Springer), I decided to indulge my passion for words. I am a French Canadian living in USA for over 17 years.
