Bio
My name is Zhang Jun. Zhang is my family name. Jun is my given name. I came from China. In China, People always put family name before the given name. We value the Family root very much. Children, especially the boy would be thought to be a family blood root. People believe that they could burn the money (special paper) to their ancestors and take care of the dead family member. That’s why the One Child Policy is so difficulty to be promoted when the policy first is prosecuted in 1980’s and 1990’s especially when the only child is a girl. Because people think Children is so important to their families’ long prosperity.

Now people get more and more educated in China. People are getting more accepted toward the one child policy. Education, knowledge could change the people’s view of the world, could promote the community and social development.

I worked in Plant Protection Station, Agricultural Technology Extension Center, Anqing Suburb Agricultural Commission, Anqing City, Anhui Province, China. Cornell is famous for its agricultural education. That’s why I could be here.

But after I came here in United States, I found the people’s relationship, people’s attitude toward the sociality, the government function, the social organization are quite different from China. I’m attracted by this new culture. I changed my major from plant pathology, plant protection to Community and Rural development, to Community education and development.

I think education is very important for every society. Even the consummate naturalist Charles Darwin realized that education was the lever for individual development and social change. In one of the famous journals he entitled: Old and Useless Notes, Darwin wrote “believer in these views will pay great attention to Education. He said that education is the most effective lever of social change. I think I take this could allow me to learn more about the community education and development.

After I come back to China, I wish I could do more to promote the knowledge and use the methods of the teaching I get here. I went to the countryside frequently, people were eager to learn advanced knowledge. When we gave the courses, people were so enthusiasm about it.
