Source text - English Thus at last the Shah was compelled to sign a treaty with France, something he was loth to do, in spite of the Georgian prize dangled before him so temptingly. But Persia was only a small pawn in the great game Napoleon played. Presently, he signed peace terms with the Emperor Alexander I, and no more was heard of returning Georgia to the Shah of Shahs. In Britain talk of French designs on India was superseded by speculations as to Russian intentions, and more missions, chiefly of a military nature, were hurriedly dispatched to Persia. In the early years of the century Russia had held the Persian border provinces of Baku, Shirvan and Karabagh, as well as some Turkish pashaliks along the Black Sea. Under the wise administration of General Tzitzianov, there had been no trouble, but after his death (by treachery) in 1806, discontent grew, and the Persians invaded and re-took Karabagh and other frontier zones.
