It was definitely a man. But I saw what you did there, Chris.

Reasonable explanations? Mar 31

I suppose there could be any amount of reasonable explanations. I just can't think of any, but then I'm not a lawyer.

So... Mar 31

So, it IS a man. Let's shoot Chris (with Glock). Bang, bang, bang.

That case looks really messy, I googled further, last I found is that he avoided sentence/imprisonment in African jail after 18 months of trials.

It kind of reminded me of that South African case with the athlete and his girlfriend, she was "found dead". I just read and found out now that he had actually been sentenced. At the time it was happening (the trial was very, very long), he denied it, with all

My mistake Apr 1

I've discontinued this because I didn't feel it was right. Sometimes I have pretty bad judgment, and I realise now it was rather tasteless to make a comedy out of extremely sad and serious situations, true or untrue, and for that I wish to apologise.

I'd like to ask you all to refrain from making any further comments on the story, if you would. That would be very much appreciated.

Happy Easter everyone Apr 2

The sun is shining (here at least), we’re free to go wherever we want (here at least) and even get a haircut (here at least).

It feels like life is finally heading back to normal (here at least).

I hope you all have a great weekend!

Right, I’m off to meet the Fokkers. Wish me luck.

Restrictions Apr 2

I must say I'm losing track of the restrictions because they keep changing. The only thing that doesn't change is a certain amount of restrictiveness. Between 29 March and 6 April, I think it is, there are various restrictions for bars and restaurants, plus we can't leave the region (although a lot of people are heading for the beaches), and there's a total ban on home gatherings with anyone who doesn't actually live in the place.

The local rag today, typically, gives the example that you can't go round to your neighbour's pad to watch the Big Basque Match with him tomorrow evening. The red and white is everywhere now. On Tuesday the front page of the newspaper had a single row showing the facade of a house with four or five adjacent flats, all decked out in red and white banners, with people from each family out on the balcony, blowing their red and white trumpets, waving red and white flags, one old man sitting in his wheelchair amid all the red and white, dogs with little red and white coats snuffling at the railings etc. The next day they added in the floor below that, with much the same thing. It was quite well done, really. Then a third the next day, and today the fourth and last (no newspaper tomorrow), with a absolute riot of red and white, with the image of the eleven Athletic players in their red and white strip, standing facing the balconies, names and numbers on their backs, waving up at the fans amid huge red and white streamers, and the inscription on a banner attached to the entire first floor balconies, Come back with the Cup!

I look out the window here and it's not quite the red and white colour orgy the paper shows, but flags and banners are fairly typical anyway here ahead of a big match, along with the odd Basque "ikurrina" flag - not too many ikurrinas in the centre of Bilbao, mostly rather conservative when it comes to elections. I can see a couple of dozen balconies decked out like that on this street.

The Romans used to keep the masses happy with bread and circuses - well, their kind of circuses - possibly bringing the crowds in to watch lions ripping the Christians apart and gladiators killing each other kept them happy. In Franco's time the watchwords were bread and bulls, although that changed over time to bread and football. Franco himself was keen on football. They say he never missed a Real Madrid match. He thought the game was useful to distract the masses too. Plus ça change ...

Now there's something I'd never thought of, liberating Covid patients from their respirators. Picture the scene as the crowds storm the hospitals and release all the prisoners there.

Most Querdenker don't deny the existence of Covid-19, they're simply opposed to the authoritarian measures the German government has introduced in response to it. It's ironic how people like you defame them as being "far-right" and so on, seeing as it's actually the German government (and other governments of course) who're the ones currently acting like fascists. Try opening your eyes.

There's a demo in Stuttgart tomorrow - I hope it's a big one!

Despondency, doom, despair, I mean. The Big Final was played down in Sevilla last night to an unpacked stadium, thanks to Mr/Madam Corona. I watched it because, although I'm not a fanatic, I like to see a game every now and then. On the box, of course. I rarely got up enough enthusiasm to pay to actually have to go and see it live. I saw Athletic Bilbao play at home once, I saw Barcelona play at home once, and I saw Derry City play at home once, and that's it. It's better in your own home, or in a bar. At the stadium, you drop your crisps, and somebody scores while you're looking for the bag under your seat, and you don't see the replay. Or the endless slow motion repeats.

Replays and slow motion. They must have shown the replay of a penalty offence in both slow motion and fast motion twenty times last night. There was no doubt it was a penalty, but apparently the issue was (1) whether Athletic defender Martínez had brought a player down inside or outside the box, and (2) whether he had handled the ball (actually, it hit his elbow from behind, from what I could see). He was given a red card, then the ref consulted with the VAR, and brought him back on with a yellow card. But Oyarzabal won the game from the spot. 1-0, and that was the way it ended. Athletic was never really in the game, though (shh, don't say I told you so ...).

I cut the sound on the TV at the final whistle, and listened. Oh dear. Not a peep from outside in Bilbao, and nobody out on the balconies parping their red and white trumpets and waving their red and white flags. I imagine the din was absolutely deafening up the coast in Donostia, aka San Sebastián, with absolutely everyone out on the balconies parping their blue and white trumpets (I assume they have the same thing there) and waving their blue and white flags.

Poor Athletic Club Bilbao. Still, cheer up, lads - that was the 2020 Copa del Rey, but meanwhile Fate dictated that they also made the final of the 2021 Copa del Rey, due to be played in a couple of weeks at the same stadium, but against Barcelona this time. Whatever happens, they'll go down in history as the first club in the realm to play two finals of the same cup in the same year.

I imagine this has happened in many countries, the national cup being postponed for a year. I don't know anything about the UK's FA Cup, but considering Boris' flaffing-around policy last spring, presumably it was played in 2020 without a hitch.
