Use a name that looks real, and build up a 'brand' Jul 10, 2012

I have an unusual maiden name, the same as an English cathedral city. There are not many of us in the various directories, and I was tired of the fact that nobody could spell it. I have an unusual maiden name, the same as an English cathedral city. There are not many of us in the various directories, and I was tired of the fact that nobody could spell it. (So it isn't Wells. ) When I married someone with a really common name, I was delighted. I can definitely understand how you feel. There are dozens with the same name as me if you google, but that can be a problem too, if people want to find you for legitimate reasons.

Using your real initials is another option. I sometimes call myself CRAndersen on websites. But my sister used her maiden name at work long after she was married.

There are a lot of relevant comments on Ty Kendall's thread - I was going to suggest it too.

In fact it is hard to check whether the name you use really is your own name. Most clients will not bother, as long you deliver the service they want. So use a middle name like Jenny, or another family name if you like. As neilmac points out, you have to give your real name sooner or later, but then you choose who you give it to. The important thing, whatever you call youself, is to create a business identity around it that clients can find, recognise and trust.

Fill out your profile with your specialist areas and all the details that clients need to know - and add plenty. There is lots of competition on this site, and the whole idea is to be 'tracked down' - in a positive way - by the people you want to work with.

There are safegards on security and your privacy. Never give your mail address openly, for instance. People can mail you by clicking the little envelope on your profile. This does not reveal your mail address, and YOU choose whether to answer the mail: if you do, your address will show on your answer, and it is assumed you don't mind.

There is a link at the bottom of all mails sent via profiles, so that you can report spam to staff instead of answering. Staff will then take action - without revealing your identity to the spammer.

Any security issues should be reported to staff, and will be taken very seriously.

Welcome to the site, and best of luck!
