Learning more about translation in the "software" field - suggestions needed Thread poster: Valentina Costa

Hello to everyone,
can anyone suggest a way (book, course, tutor,..) to get better knowledge on software translations, like how to properly translate for webpage and software in general, file types, tags, and all related subjects?

I don't know if this is exactly what you're looking for, but a good place to start would be the Microsoft Style Guide.
I hope this helps at least a little.

Hello Valentina,
I good starting point for beginners is "A Practical Guide to Localization" from Bert Esselink. It's quite old (2000) but gives you a good overview. All other books are much more technical.

The best way to learn these things is hands-on. It depends on why you want to go for this specialist area. Do you have any initial offers or opportunities to get into this kind of work, for example a tentative offer from a company working in this area, or do you simply feel it is something you might enjoy/be good at/make a living from?
In the former case, the company/person might be able to get you started by showing you how their target SW is put together and how it might be handled with translation SW like Trados etc. (which I assume you already have some experience in). They could probably also recommend approriate text editors for the strings they need translated.

I think this is a great tool and guidance. I need some integration, but it is a great reference. Microsoft has a bunch of interesting tools up there. Once I was given an http address for Microsoft but I guess it was outdated as it never worked, and I guess this was the one. Thank you very much Stanislav!

I am reading other reviews regarding this book and it definitely looks like a good starting point as you suggested, before getting into more detailed books or practice.

Hello Neilmac,
I did couple of translations involving this area, but I would like to get more work on this. Though, at this stage I haven't really found a company giving me suggestions as I guess the company goes to someone who is already specialized in software and webpage translations first. I have experience with Trados, and a little experience with software but it can get hard to get more jobs in that field without having a lot of experience and no one investing in collaborating. If you know any company that is willing to work with me and are available for suggestions, well, I am very willing to co-operate!
