This post is about rates as a newbie. Threads evolve and the subject can change. However, personal comments are not allowed. This thread has gone off limits. The initial subject-matter has been hijacked as for comments criticising one individual with regard to open questions, which are nothing at all to do with the initial subject.

All, I just de-vetted (hid) a number of posts which were off-topic and starting to get rather personal. Please stick to the topic, and keep the other issues professional and in the right forum. Thank you. James | | |

Yes, I've lost some clients by doing so, but others have stepped in to replace them. I'm pretty sure that, had I started out at €0.06 psw, it would have been harder, not easier. There are translators out there working for €0.06 psw and even for half that. Mostly, they are translators who can only sell themselves on price and their clients are liable to discover that they can get similar quality for free from DeepL Translator or even Google Translate. Many translation clients don't know about translation and are in no position to judge what quality they are receiving, particularly if their own language is the source and not the target language. There are cheapo agencies exploiting this and, when a client occasionally twigs that they paid for a rubbish translation, those agencies will blame the translator, rather than admit that good translators won't work for the rates they pay. The crucial thing is that you need to be sure about and constantly review the quality of service you deliver. There are still clients out there who will pay decent rates for a quality service. ▲ Collapse | | | Emily Gilby United Kingdom Local time: 12:40 Member (2018) French to English + ... TOPIC STARTER
