Interpreters of the world, beware! Here it comes... WT2 Plus real-time in-ear bilingual translator Feb 21, 2020

There are more and more gadgets which offer a reasonably practical level of interpreting.

Vasco Mini 2 is from the horse and buggy era.

Meet WT2 Plus — a new kid on the block that is likely to disrupt the market for interpreting services very soon.

There are plenty of mobile phone apps and portable “translators” that can interpret words spoken in one language to another. But, like Google Translate or iTranslate, these services can only handle one-way interpretation at a time – for example, English to Chinese – but not vice versa without changing settings.
Timekettle, a start-up based in Shenzhen, southern China, has developed a portable translator that promises to skip the set-up process – once the device is on, you and the other party can converse freely in your respective languages and interpretation takes place in real time for both sides. We put it to the test to see if it works as advertised.

@Vladimir, do you remember sky-is-falling-mongers, proclaiming "MT will replace human translators!", no? Actually, it does kill so-called 'pure' translators who lack sanity and biz awareness. Nothing personal though. Yet no sensible person--being of sound mind and under no duress--would recklessly risk the fortune, health, or even life, relying on human-like MT. The same goes with interpreters: no gadget could take into account the context, intonation, pronunciation, dialects, personal, interference, and other peculiarities beyond smalltalk. Moreover, my direct clients often pay me $750+ per 15-60 minutes for elbow/whisper cross-interpreting/translating 'as is'--without political correctness and diplomatic tricks.

Here it comes again... The same old mantra about a sensible genius with biz awareness:)

You’d better develop some sense of humor as soon as possible. You will be able to identify a joke when you come across one.

I think this thread has now run its course Feb 25, 2020

    And will stop it here.

Thank you all for the discussion, but it has now got a little too personal from time to time about fellow translators.

    Let's stop it here.
