Hi, I am an English student of translation currently completing my MA at the University of Westminster, London, UK. I work from French, Spanish and Catalan into English.

Hi, I am an English student of translation currently completing my MA at the University of Westminster, London, UK. I work from French, Spanish and Catalan into English.

In order to complete my MA, I have to submit a translation of a 6,000-8,000 word text of a fairly technical or specialised nature. The text must not have been previously translated into English, and there must be a concrete and valid reason for requiring a translation of the text. It can be as specific as I like and can be of any nature, a whole or partial document (eg an entire Masters thesis or a few chapters of a book) and on any topic.

I am hoping that there is someone, somewhere who may be able to help me find such a text. I would be happy to do it for free, as long as the author/publisher gives their permission for the translation, and would also be happy for it to be a test translation for an agency. I would consider any offers, although I would prefer French or Spanish as I cannot find a supervising lecturer to oversee me for Catalan. If you can help in any way, please reply to this post or email me on [email protected]

I have always received lots of help from proz.com with my translation issues in the past, and have even ventured my own opinions on some questions, so I am hoping someone can help me now!

Thanks for your time

choosing a text Nov 18, 2002

Hi Louisa

I have also recently completely a masters in translation at a British university, and I also had to translate an as-yet untranslated text into English (or I could have written a commentary on an already translated text - do you have that option?), although I have not yet got it published. My translation had to be approximately 5000 words with a commentary twice that size. Do you have to write a commentary explaining how you translated the text and your motivation?

Hi Louisa

My translation had to be approximately 5000 words with a commentary twice that size. Do you have to write a commentary explaining how you translated the text and your motivation?

My advice to you is to 1-pick the language you are most comfortable translating from 2-pick the subject you are most comfortable and interested in translating about 3-pick the type of text about(ie a manual, a book, a magazine article) you\'d be most interested to translate (even restaurants menus can be an idea if you\'re interested in translating things about food!) and then 4-go and see your supervisor about it. They can actually tell you what is the best idea for you since they should know your strengths and weaknesses, and should be able to advise you. Personally I also suggest that you pick a subject that once you are qualified professionally you would be interested in translating further - eg legal/medical/technical translation, etc.

I\'m afraid I can\'t offer you any advice about a particular text as that is really dependent on your own interests. In any case, good luck! I hope you find something approprate and enjoyable soon,

best wishes

Aisha
