Hello, I wonder if anyone can help me. I am currently studying for a BA in Modern language studies (french and spanish) but I am also studying first year university level polish. I have had a look on the IOL website and I am very interested to know more about the Metropolitan Police Test.
*Can you tell me, if in the future I decide to take the Met test (and register with the NRPSI) will it
enable me to work at any police station in the UK?

Do try not to get disheartened by unhelpful reponses to your questions, even if it is your very first experience on proz. It is, on the whole, a very helpful and professional community.
I personally don't have the MET test but have 2 DPSIs which are very similar in contents. I believe University of Westminster do MET preparetion courses. I often look at the ITI website as there are many more training courses to be had, and am sure I saw a number of MET o... See more Hi Rose Petal,

I personally don't have the MET test but have 2 DPSIs which are very similar in contents. I believe University of Westminster do MET preparetion courses. I often look at the ITI website as there are many more training courses to be had, and am sure I saw a number of MET ones there. As far as I know once you hold their test you are entitled to register on NRPSI and work anywhere in the UK but I have to say that in my experience, DPSI takes precedence when public service sector looks for interpreters. It also means being able to work in courts on all levels, and I don't know to what extent MET test prepares you for that.
Without wanting to sound patronising, I do salute you for trying to go about things the right way round. There are unfortunately too many interpreters with no training or qualifications who like to think that they can handle these, many times extremely sensitive, situations without any difficulties, and the amount of time, effort and money it takes us experienced interpreters, police forces and courts to rectify their errors can be immense.
One word of warning though, all three of your languages are fairly common though (and you would need to qualify for each of them separately to be able to work in them) and in some areas of the UK the market is pretty saturated with them.

Thank you so much for your advice, it's been really helpful. At the moment i'm just researching to find out what qualification and language would best suit me before making a firm decision. Apart from doing the degree in French and Spanish, and studying polish I also have upper intermediate knowledge of Italian and A level standard Arabic. The Met test does sound like a good idea but i'm now wondering if the DPSI would be a more flexible option. One query I have with the DPSI is what would be best area to specialise in; Health, Law(English) or Local government. In your opinion, which would be the best to go for? How would I go about finding glossaries/terminology etc to prepare myself for the exams?
I completely understand about trying to do it the right way, the thought had briefly crossed my mind about trying a few translations without any professional qualifications but I thought it was more important to have some qualifications behind me and do a really good job interpreting/translating. I wouldn't like to put myself in the position where I could make some rather costly mistakes because I wasn't qualified enough.

I can only tell you that the local government and health sector are dominated by money-grabbing agencies who care nothing about your qualification and I don't think that they would increase your pay just because you hold a DPSI, they are quite happy to send an unqualified person to even the stickiest medical situation because it means more money in their pocket. I hold DPSI in health and law and I don't do any work for health as I refuse to work for these agencies on principle. But I do live in the North West and situation may be different with you. As to glossaries etc, I really don't know. I know there are many courses being run by different bodies accross the country so maybe you could ask CIoL for their list.
