The interpreter used for this event is a complete fraud. Do you know of similar incidents?

Yes, but that was a private affair. Do you know of televised and/or large public events where similar things have happened?

IMHO murder trial is hardly a private affair.

Well, it is not a large event with hundreds of people in attendance and is not televised to a public audience and participation is limited to strict rules and conventions. A murder trial is not a "public event" unless it is someone famous who got killed or who killed. It is fairly private.

New development... Dec 12, 2013

The interpreter at the Mandela event has said that he experienced a schizophrenic episode while interpreting:

Depends on the country, perhaps... Dec 12, 2013

Murder trials are fairly public in the United States and often attract media coverage. Some are televised as well.

Security Dec 12, 2013

This guy was probably the first line of security fro the speakers, it just a shame they didn't have somebody who actually knew the sign language. I mean, there's no way a "fake interpreter" can stand right next to Obama.

If something had happened at the funeral, he probably would've been a hero.

Oh dear. First of all one person claimed on twitter that he had already done it at another televised event (faked signing, that is). That was not an international event so it didn't make the news quite like this. So it seems likely that he is just a fraud, or he keeps having schizophrenic episodes at the worst time. But if he is actually schizophrenic, how on earth could he have been allowed to stand three feet from Obama? Who is handling security there? And why didn't they have a backup interpreter?

What about the company? Dec 12, 2013

This guy was sent by an interpretation company. What company is going to send a charlatan to probably one of the biggest events in modern time?

The company... Dec 12, 2013

This article includes a little information about the company, including the name:

http://news.yahoo.com/mandela-mimer-hits-back-39-m-sign-language-071924797.html

Apparently, no one has been able to track them down since the signing debacle occurred.

Unbelievable but they never learn.

Jantjie, whose first language is Xhosa -- the same as Mandela’s -- was paid 800 rand ($77) for the full-day event, Bogopane-Zulu said. That compares with the as much as 1,700 rand an hour typical fee for a sign language interpreter, she said.

They should have hired this little girl instead! Dec 12, 2013

http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlines/2013/12/5-year-old-girl-surprises-deaf-parents-at-school-holiday-concert/

She interpreted the songs for her deaf parents, so they could enjoy the kindergarten Christmas show!

Simply adorable.
