During the weekend I watched Black Rain in original version, kind of soporific and predictable but good to laze by after lunch. Perhaps you’ve seen it, with Michael Douglas and Andy García as two tough NY cops who lose a Yakuza prisoner they’re supposed to be escorting to Japan and then spend the rest of the film dodging bullets and machetes amid a torrent of foul language. Well, Michael Douglas spends the rest of the film doing that, as poor Andy doesn’t manage to dodge all those machete... Perhaps you’ve seen it, with Michael Douglas and Andy García as two tough NY cops who lose a Yakuza prisoner they’re supposed to be escorting to Japan and then spend the rest of the film dodging bullets and machetes amid a torrent of foul language. Well, Michael Douglas spends the rest of the film doing that, as poor Andy doesn’t manage to dodge all those machetes, and gets taken out early.
Anyway, one obvious problem as they battle the Mob and unsympathetic Japanese police on their own turf is the language, and at first nobody translates anything for them. Fed up with all this, one evening (EVENING, remember that …) Douglas loses it with his Japanese colleague and shouts something like: I don’t give a **** about that, why are the police here such a****s, what I want are the ******* police files on all your ******* Yakuza members, translated into a language we can ******* understand by 9 o’clock tomorrow ******* morning!!
It's just a detail to Hollywood, but how I laughed to see that the next morning at the police station the two Americans have been suitably placated as all this stuff has indeed been translated! Can you imagine being the translator picking up the phone to get roped into that one? Police files on ALL the Yakuza members? But, even worse, they’re hardly likely to outsource all that sensitive information, so it’s more likely that some police minion who has a good command of English is detailed into a helluva lot of overtime.

I dunno what Japan is like, but this is exactly what corporate culture in China is like. During a major corporate event a couple of months ago, my colleague got a call from the secretary of some executive, saying, his presentation is tomorrow, so we'll need it translated by 8am. It's not ready yet, but we'll get it to you by 10. Or maybe 1am.
I don't really mind that sort of thing, because I firmly believe that "clients say the funniest things". ... See more ...welcome to my life.
