African languages are not concerned Jun 10, 2019

When I am working with foreign languages, MT is sometimes surprisingly correct. But translating African culture, hybrid text and African languages is still under the control of a human being

Not in my world Jun 11, 2019

I've been working with Spanish-English translation for over 30 years using a proprietary system. Efforts to shift the system away from sets of rules and plow in random data from all over the place have caused major deterioration. I can't speak for other systems or other language combinations.

I've been impressed by some recent results I've seen from Portuguese to English, I think using Google Translate.

The answer depends a lot on the languages in question and how long the systems have been operational.

Yes. I have seen some significant improvements in MT recently.

Yes, a lot, but... Jun 11, 2019

the improvement has a big drawback:

in the early age, translations were so bad that one had no hesitation in checking every line carefully

now, in my language couple at least, the translations are often so "sensible and fluent"
that you risk missing a blunder a lot more than before

so be careful more than before, dear peers

Depends on the subject Jun 12, 2019

I have MT running in the background all the time. If I do typical corporate hype, I may be able to use MT selectively. If I do patent or other legal translation, not so much.
