A new way to add localized video greetings to your main profile, as well as any Pools you're a member of, has been released today on ProZ.com. This feature is currently in alpha.

Test here: Profile settings > Marketing and promotion > Video greetings

A profile video is an excellent way to introduce yourself to potential clients and colleagues. Through video, you’re able to talk about your professional interests as well as demonstrate your language abilities — something very important for an interpreter, for example.

In today’s release, there’s now a way to either drag and drop an existing file on your computer, or use your webcam (currently FireFox only).

Please let me know how the process of recording/uploading goes for you, and if you run into any problems. This is an initial release and your help will aid in improving the feature further.

Note: You'll need to upload only .mp4 (mpeg) videos for now. We'll increase support for other formats after this testing period.

20 MB seems quite restrictive for a HD video.

Opt-OUT by default, please Feb 3, 2018

Those of us with low-bandwidth metered web access* do not necessarily need/want to expend scarce resources when viewing a colleague’s profile.

Please make sure all profile visitors are opted OUT of these videos (downloading and viewing), unless they decide deliberately to opt-IN (site-wide) via an option in their profiles, or (individually) via a "view video" button in the profile of the individual member who is trying to seduce us with a smile.

* By way of illustration, my "wideband mobile" dongle is at this very moment running (staggering...) at around 24 kbit/s. That's slower than the very first analogue modem I used in Europe well over 20 years ago.

For members, perhaps we could raise the limit. What would be your suggestion?

The videos on page shouldn't affect your page load times as the video won't be loaded until a viewer clicks to play the video. If that is not the case, and you notice a profile with a video slowing bogging down your connection, please let me know.

This capability is a double-edged sword Feb 6, 2018

Video is an excellent tool to showcase one's skills as an interpreter, a voiceover artist and the like. However, for pure advertising to our most typical market (that is, to businesses rather than consumers), it is terrible. Putting myself in the shoes of a potential buyer of linguistic services not involving provider's voice and/or face, if I saw a video in a profile, I wouldn't bother watching it and might even drop this candidate altogether. Putting myself in the shoes of a potential buyer of linguistic services not involving provider's voice and/or face, if I saw a video in a profile, I wouldn't bother watching it and might even drop this candidate altogether. The reasons are threefold. Firstly, watching a video takes longer than reading the same information in textual form – nobody likes their time wasted, even if it is only a few seconds. Secondly, unlike written text, a video imposes a certain pace of viewing (you cannot make it slower or faster without some serious knowledge of technology); if this pace fails to match the viewer's own pace of perception, it will generate disappointment. Thirdly, some colleagues may disagree, but in my own experience, the people who prefer video as a presentation tool are usually not the brightest and not the most pleasant to deal with.Collapse

It would appear that one can also use Youtube to host the video.

Thanks, Samuel. When Daniel posted, that option was not yet available.

Adding a video won't be for everyone. Thanks for sharing your perspective on this, but I still think it's an interesting format to experiment with. So I hope others will attempt to be creative and original in the content they could potentially use in a short welcome video.
