Hi,

Spanish to English is not one of my working language pairs.

However, because of the generally poor standard of PT»EN legal dictionaries, I'd like to do some "terminology mining" from ES»EN resources and create better glossaries in specific areas of the law for my PT»EN work.

I've studied the Spanish legal system in some detail and am familiar with ES legal terminology and how similar/dissimilar it can be to PT, so those pitfalls will be covered.

I'd appreciate it if ES»EN legal translators could indicate their preferred legal dictionary resources (title and author).

It doesn't matter if the resource covers other Spanish-speaking countries as well (as long as it covers Spain). Likewise it doesn't matter if the EN is more geared towards the US, as I can adapt my glossaries accordingly. The main issue is accuracy.

TIA
Deborah

Thanks Marcela Apr 27, 2007

I'm sure they will come in useful. Thanks very much!

I'm actually after recommendations for specialist legal dictionaries in traditional book form (or otherwise CD), rather than online resources.

Best regards
Deborah

Check these Apr 27, 2007

Hi Deborah,

The "Diccionario de términos jurídicos. Inglés-Español, Spanish-English", by Enrique Alcaraz Varó and Brian Hughes has always been useful to me when translating legal matters. For more info about this and other books by the same authors, check: http://www.ariel.es/obrlst02.asp?AUT=166

I hope this helps.
Regards,
Jerónimo

Spanish to English Legal Dictionaries Apr 27, 2007

I have found Thomas West's "Spanish-English Dictionary of Law and Business" extremely useful. The author is a lawyer (and the founder of a leading legal translation agency) and it does make a difference. I don't know whether the dictionary is currently in print, but here's the reference:

Thomas L. West, III
Spanish-English Dictionary of Law and Business
Atlanta: Protea Publishing, 1999
ISBN 1-883707-37-4

Saludos desde Madrid,
Rebecca

Deborah,

This dictionary's entries are very complete and detailed, providing background information on U.S./U.K. differences as well as notes indicating the term's use in different subfields of law.

It is sitting on my desk, right in front of me, right now, which just reinforces my sense that it's the best! (I do use other resources but I work on sociolegal issues in Mexico, so they probably wouldn't be of much interest to you.)

Patricia

Alcaraz and Hughes have published very good reference books and dictionaries regarding the legal field.

Good luck
Gabi

I also have this dictionary and would definitely recommend it.

If any of you have access, please prompt whether it is perhaps only for special group of translators (though there is no implication about it in the website) or if you can suggest any similar parallel corpus of legal translations. Thank you very much.
