(1) Where in the world are we (as translators)?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The recent ProZ.com quick poll "Where in the world are you?" resulted in 1717 responses showing the following breakdown:
Europe .......................... 68.3%
North America .......................... 12.1%
South America .......................... 9.3%
Asia .......................... 7.1%
Africa .......................... 1.2%
Australia / New Zealand .............. 0.9%
Other.......................... 1.2%
An interesting discussion ensued. To read it, go to: http://www.proz.com/topic/104656
Thanks, i Translate (and earlier, Sherefedin MUSTAFA), for the poll!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(2) Connect spinoff: new directory (and job posting system) with real-time filtering
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Do you outsource translation work? If so, you probably already know that the ProZ.com database of translators, interpreters and translation companies is the most powerful and most complete directory available today. But what if...
* ... you could search the directory one parameter at a time, with results updated in real time?
* ... you could customize the information displayed in the search results, showing only what is most important to you?
* ... you could search and post with greater precision (for example, inviting quotes only from interpreters living within a certain distance of a given city, who are available on a certain day)?
* ... you could post jobs in a highly targeted manner, with a custom-built questionnaire, and then track and export candidate responses from a single easy to use panel?
Now, if you are a ProZ.com member, all of this is possible.
In a spin-off from the "Connect" program, beta versions of a new directory and new job posting system are now available to ProZ.com members. While not having all the features of the full Connect platform, the new systems have been judged by four out of five of those surveyed to represent improvements over their current counterparts. Comments made:
- "The overall design and layout is much better and more clear. It provides many more options for a detailed search."
- "I like how it narrows down candidates as you include more details."
- "Much better - clearer and faster, easier to select the right person."
- "I believe that a lot of [effort has] been put into this and improvement was definitely achieved."
The ProZ.com team stands ready to further refine and enhance the new platform. To try out the new features and provide additional requests or feedback, go to ProZ.com and look for the new options under the "Directories" and "Jobs" tabs.
Or, go directly to http://www.proz.com/new-directory (Consider bookmarking this link if you outsource.)
Please send your feedback and requests via http://www.proz.com/support
Thank you, members, for making this new development possible through your investment in the site!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(3) Membership campaign: A sound investment for your business
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The theme for this year's mid-year membership campaign is "A sound investment for your business."
As a freelancer, you run a business. You want to make investments that help to grow your business. ProZ.com membership is one such investment.
Full ProZ.com members enjoy privileged access and exposure to potential clients, and as a result, meet new clients online more than four times as frequently as non-members. The investment is so effective that many realize a return on their annual ProZ.com membership payment with just the first job from the first new client (and over 40% of the time, that happens within three months.)
Overall, by the end of their first year, 86% of ProZ.com members have profited from their membership - with thousands realizing 10x or even 100x returns.
Among the incentives of the current campaign are a free month of membership and a chance to win a laptop or a trip to a ProZ.com event. The campaign runs through June 12. See: http://www.proz.com/campaign
Quote from a member:
"Once I discovered ProZ.com, I immediately became a member and started to reply to job offers. Now, thanks to ProZ.com I have many good clients all over the world... my dream of becoming a full-time freelance translator has come true, together with a good income."
(8) ProZ.com Professional Guidelines endorsed by over 1800
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

In last month's newsletter it was announced that a means has been made available to endorse ProZ.com's Professional Guidelines from within the profile. Over 1800 profile owners have endorsed the guidelines so far.

With the release of the ability to endorse, there was renewed discussion about the details of the guidelines. As a result of the discussion, one of the guidelines ("provide promptly, to all parties, glossaries and other resources that may be useful") was removed. (Since the only change for now is the removal of an item, endorsements made up to now remain current.)

To review the guidelines, see: http://www.proz.com/professional-guidelines

(10) Indicating your availability - worthwhile for meeting clients
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
With more translators making a habit of updating their availability calendars, it is becoming easier for outsourcers to search specifically for translators that are currently available.
This means that if you are interested in meeting new clients, filling in your availability calendar is a worthwhile exercise. Do so here: http://www.proz.com/calendar (Consider bookmarking this page.)
Note that:
* This page also includes the option of entering your daily capacity.
* An update is planned to make the process of completing the availability calendar more efficient.
(11) Find out which of your clients are providing WWA feedback to ProZ.com translators
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

A few months ago changes were made to ProZ.com's WWA ("willingness to work again") feedback system. This made it easier for site users to request feedback from clients, and easier for clients to provide it. As a result, the number of translators with positive feedback in their profiles has increased significantly, with the number now approaching 5000.

In addition, it has recently become possible for outsourcers to search specifically for translators who show feedback from at least one satisfied client in their profiles.

If you have not yet obtained positive feedback from a client but would like to explore the possibility, have a look at the new "statistics" tab in the WWA control center. In addition to viewing the top providers of feedback among the ProZ.com outsourcer community, you can check on whether a particular outsourcer has already made entries for others. If you find a client of yours among the list of companies providing feedback, that client may be an easy one to ask for feedback, as it will be clear that they are already familiar with the system and support its use.

(13) Did you know? Statistics related to job postings.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
* Including job postings and directory searches, translators obtain paid projects via ProZ.com at a rate of one every four to six minutes.
* More than half of jobs available for quoting get five quotes or fewer. Approximately 10% get no quotes at all.
* Some form of certification is required by 11% of job posters.
* "Tech/Engineering" is the most common classification for job posts, followed closely by "Bus/Financial", "Marketing", "Law/Patents" and "Medical" (in that order). Science, Social Sciences and Art/Literary are in the next tier.
* For directory searches this month, English to Chinese has been the most frequently requested pair. The Chinese speaking sub-community is ProZ.com's fastest growing.
* There are a number of language pairs in which a substantial number of job posts is made, yet in which there is not a single member with a complete profile. Khmer to English, with 36 posts and no complete profile members, is one. For others, see: http://www.proz.com/jobs/?sp_mode=about&pg=pair_stats
