Source text - English BRITISH COMMON LAW AND FRENCH CIVIL LAW IN CANADA
Canada has experienced the establishment of two legal systems on its land – one comes from the region of Paris, and has survived in what was New France at the time when sovereignty was transferred after the Conquest, while the law in force in the other provinces originated in England. Here in Canada, the preservation of this legal duality derives from the division of legislative powers set out in the Canadian Constitution: the provinces have the power to legislate in relation to property and civil rights under subsection 92(13) of the Constitution Act, 1867, that is, in relation to the essential subject matter of private law. Nine of the ten Canadian provinces, along with the three territories apply the rules of common law. Quebec, on the other hand, uses the civil law for its private law.
The Custom of Paris, through the royal edicts and the orders of the governors, was the main source of law in New France until the British Conquest. In 1763, under the Treaty of Paris, the King of England ordered, by royal proclamation, the creation of “Courts of Judicature and Public Justice for hearing all Causes according to the Laws of England”. But despite the attempts by the new mother country to impose its laws, the citizens continued to organize their private relationships outside the new courts, and where necessary sought a decision from the curate, the notary or the “seigneur” on whom they were dependent.
The inhabitants’ determination to preserve their private law was a contributing factor in the compromise expressed in the Quebec Act, which was enacted by the British Parliament in 1774. Section 8 restored the absolute authority of the French laws from before the conquest, with certain minor reservations, except in criminal and penal cases. This is the origin of the coexistence of French civil law and British common law in Canada. The Quebec Act has never been repealed, and today, despite the restrictions introduced by the Constitution Act, 1867, it is still the foundation of Quebec’s private law.

La détermination des habitants à garder leur droit privé fut un facteur non négligeable dans le compromis formulé dans l’Acte de Québec, promulgué par le Parlement britannique en 1774. L’article 8 redonna, avec quelques réserves mineures, pleine force aux lois françaises d’avant la Conquête sauf en matière de droit pénal et criminel. Ainsi fut consommé le mariage de raison entre le droit civil français et la common law britannique. Malgré les balises prescrites par la Loi constitutionnelle de 1867, l’Acte de Québec ne fut jamais abrogé et demeure encore aujourd’hui l’essence même du droit privé québécois.

An air-purifying respirator cleanses the contaminated atmosphere prior to inhalation. Depending on which type of air-purifying element is selected, specific gases, vapours, particles, or a combination of these contaminants can be removed as the air moves through the air-purifying element. What is removed depends on the type of air-purifying elements used. Air-purifying respirators are restricted to environments that have sufficient oxygen to support life.
Air-purifying respirators can either be non-powered or powered. Non-powered air-purifying respirators rely on the wearer’s inhalation to draw air through the air-purifying element and into the wearer’s lungs. Powered air-purifying respirators (PAPR) uses a mechanical blower to force air through the air-purifying elements.
Powered air-purifying respirators supply respirable air at a positive-pressure. Positive-pressure PAPRs force air through an air-purifying element and into the wearers facepiece, preventing contaminants from entering the facepiece in the event of a break in the seal between the wearer’s face and the respirator. Non-powered air-purifying respirators work on negative-pressure. Positive-pressure PAPRs are assigned a higher level of protection than their negative pressure counterpart, when operated at the recommended flow rate: 4 - 6 CFMs, depending on the model.

Les APR à épuration d’air motorisés fournissent l’air filtré à une pression positive et poussent l'air à travers un élément filtrant, puis dans le masque des utilisateurs. Ils empêchent les contaminants de pénétrer dans le masque en cas d'une perte d’étanchéité entre la jupe du masque et le visage de l’utilisateur. Par contre, les APR à épuration d’air fonctionnent à une pression négative. Les APR à épuration d’air motorisés offrent un facteur de protection plus élevé que les APR à épuration d’air qui fonctionnent à une pression négative, mais seulement si les premiers sont utilisés en respectant le débit d’air recommandé : 4 à 6 pi3 par min, selon le modèle utilisé.
