Source text - Polish Choć wyimagowane wizerunki autochtonów zastąpiły w zbiorowej wyobraźni rzeczywistych przedstawicieli australijskiej i kanadyjskiej ludności natywnej, nie oznacza to jednak bynajmniej, że nie podejmowano z nimi polemiki i nie próbowano ich obalić. Pewnym paradoksem jest jednak to, że nawet wówczas dyskusja taka miała miejsce w obrębie dyskursu zdominowanego właśnie przez owe stereotypowe przedstawienia. Efektem tego było więc zastąpienie jednych skonwencjonalizowanych obrazów innymi – tyle, że może bardziej wysublimowanymi, do kreacji których dopuszczano także częściowo samych zainteresowanych. Przykładem tego może być motyw spotkania z Innym, połączony z próbą jego zrozumienia, który ma oczywiście na celu przełamanie negatywnie nacechowanych wyobrażeń tubylca, jednak sam w sobie jest przecież także rodzajem powielanej kliszy.
Czy jest w tym jednak coś nagannego? Czy każdy stereotyp zawsze należy rozpatrywać jako moralnie napiętnowany? Jestem zdania, że nie wszystkie wyobrażone wizerunki Aborygenów, Indian i Inuitów były i są krzywdzące dla przedstawicieli tych społeczności, mimo że odbiegają one od rzeczywistości. W zachodnim dyskursie oprócz pogardy – której zaprzeczyć się nie da – jest bowiem także miejsce na pewną dawkę podziwu i szacunku dla skolonizowanych przed laty autochtonów. Przejawia się to między innymi w coraz silniejszym w ostatnich dekadach mityzowaniu ich kultury, przedstawianiu jej jako prawdziwszej i uczciwszej niż zachodnie rozwiązania cywilizacyjne, podczas gdy w rzeczywistości porównań takich oczywiście w ogóle nie da się przeprowadzić.
Ten wyidealizowany obraz tubylców, popularność w ramach dominującego dyskursu zdobywał sukcesywnie od końca lat 60. XX wieku, kiedy to zachodnie społeczeństwa imperialne zmierzyć musiały się z przybierającą na sile falą politycznych przemian, która przejawiała się z jednej strony dekolonizacją i uzyskaniem niepodległości przez wiele byłych kolonii, a z drugiej stopniową emancypacją rasową w ramach wielokulturowych państw emigracyjnych, także o kolonialnej przeszłości. W ramach postkolonialnych rozliczeń wprowadzających nowe zasady politycznej poprawności, niektóre stereotypy dotyczące australijskiej i kanadyjskiej ludności rdzennej, musiały więc ulec modyfikacjom. Tym przeobrażonym wizerunkom przypisywano określoną misję społeczną - służyć miały one odtąd szczytnym celom utopijnego projektu wielokulturowości, w którym swoje miejsce znaleźć mieli nie tylko imigranci i ich potomkowie, ale przecież także natywni mieszkańcy obu krajów.
W tak rozumianą misję wpisują się dwa filmy, których fabuła obraca się wokół spotkania z Innym, co na zawsze zmienia światopogląd reprezentanta kolonizatorów lub ich potomków: Tropiciel (The Tracker) Rolfa de Heera z 2002 roku i Zimne piekło (The Snow Walker) Charlesa Martina Smitha z 2003 roku. W każdym z tych dzieł biali bohaterowie pod wpływem spotkania z natywnym mieszkańcem podbitych ziem, przechodzą światopoglądową przemianę, co czyni ich świadomymi i po prostu lepszymi ludźmi.
Mimo pogłębionych portretów psychologicznych ukazanych postaci i szczytnych idei międzykulturowego porozumienia, które stanowią tutaj główne przesłanie, trudno nie zgodzić się z opinią, że filmy te bazują na powtarzalnych konwencjach zaczerpniętych
w dużej mierze z wykształconych na przełomie XIX i XX wieku wyobrażeń tubylców.
Pobrzmiewają tu chociażby echa figury szlachetnego dzikusa, którego charakteryzuje silny związek z naturą i wierność jej odwiecznym prawom. Wykorzystanie tego motywu służy jednak tutaj innym niż niegdyś celom – filmy te bowiem, pełnią funkcję najeźdźczego rozliczenia grzechów i postkolonialnej pokuty, co ma załagodzić zbiorowe wyrzuty sumienia społeczeństw współczesnych Australii i Kanady i zabliźnić kolonialną ranę. Oto biały kolonizator (lub jego potomek) staje naprzeciw rdzennego przedstawiciela podbitych ziem już nie po to, by nieść mu odkupienie, lecz by samemu tego odkupienia dostąpić.
Zimne piekło i Tropiciel łączy motyw wspólnej podróży i relacji, jaka podczas niej zawiązuje się pomiędzy reprezentantami kolonizatorów i skolonizowanych, czego skutkiem jest wewnętrzna przemiana najeźdźcy. Sięgnięcie po topos wędrówki odmieniającej życie człowieka, wiąże się oczywiście z umiejscowieniem przedstawianej opowieści w przewidywalnej strukturze narracyjnej, a dydaktyczna misja obu filmów wymaga posłużenia się czytelnymi schematami. Wizerunek przedstawionych tu bohaterów zdeterminowany jest przez wywodzącą się z zachodniej cywilizacji tradycję chrześcijańską – oba dzieła noszą w sobie cechy przypowieści przeciwstawiającej złu dobro, przez co bazują na pewnych uproszczeniach w portretowaniu postaci, których cechy charakteru są jednoznaczne i tworzą ich spójny, wyrazisty obraz. Wizerunek ten jest więc wyobrażony: bohaterów i ich działań nie można odczytywać dosłownie, gdyż nie są to wierne odzwierciedlenia rzeczywistości, ale alegoria, której zadaniem jest rzeczywistość tę zmienić.
W obu filmach podróż jest wędrówką ku odkupieniu, jakiego dostąpić ma kolonizator, dzięki odkryciu w Innym swego bliźniego i uświadomieniu sobie, że rola jaką dotychczas pełnił na zdobytych ziemiach, jest w istocie funkcją oprawcy, a dziki, któremu miał nieść cywilizacyjny postęp, to jego ofiara. Oczyszczenie, które następuje pośród dziewiczego krajobrazu skolonizowanego kraju, wymaga jednak symbolicznego poświęcenia życia – w przypadku Tropiciela jest to życie oprawcy o zatwardziałym sercu, w Zimnym piekle - życie reprezentantki ludności natywnej.
Ten drugi z wymienionych tu filmów jest historią młodego kanadyjskiego pilota Charlie’ego Hallidaya (Barry Pepper), przemierzającego trasy ponad pustkowiami Terytorium Północnego, który w wyniku niespodziewanego zbiegu okoliczności, zmuszony jest przemierzyć bezkresne arktyczne pustkowie wraz z młodą i śmiertelnie chorą Inuitką. Charlie jest typowym zadufanym w sobie arogantem, rasistą określającym Inuitów pogardliwym mianem husky.
Pod względem charakterologicznym, osobowość dziewiętnastoletniej Kanaalaq (Annabella Pigattuk) jest silnie skontrastowana z postacią Charlie’ego. Jej figura jest
w filmie wyobrażeniem szlachetnych cech Inuitów oraz ich bezbronności względem agresywnej ekspansji białych najeźdźców. Kanaalaq jest uosobieniem zbiorowego wyrzutu sumienia kolonizatorów, dlatego jej postać jest nieskazitelna pod względem etycznym. Dziewczynę cechuje więc łagodność, pracowitość, uczciwość, czujność, niewiarygodna wręcz cierpliwość i co najważniejsze - zdolność do najwyższego poświęcenia za drugiego człowieka.
Dziewczyna uczy pilota, jak żyć w zgodzie ze światem natury i przetrwać
w środowisku o tak trudnych warunkach klimatycznych. Przekazuje mu też jednak znacznie więcej, gdyż uświadamia młodemu mężczyźnie, że prawdziwe człowieczeństwo, to uznanie drugiej istoty ludzkiej za swojego brata. Ta idea braterstwa jest w filmie mocno zaznaczona - za sprawą spotkania z Kanaalaq, Charlie uzmysławia sobie, że jest bratem – zarówno tej młodej dziewczyny, jak i Inuity, którego sponiewierał w jednej z pierwszych scen filmu, ale też każdego innego człowieka na Ziemi.
Zimne piekło jest swobodną adaptacją opowiadania Farleya Mowata, Walk Well, My Brother, wydanego po raz pierwszy w 1975 roku w zbiorze noszącym ten sam tytuł, co film . Przesłanie zarówno literackiego pierwowzoru, jak i filmu, co podkreśla sam reżyser , zmieścić można właściwie w tym krótkim zdaniu zawartym w tytule opowiadania. Wypowiada je śmiertelnie chora Kanaalaq, która oddaje ciągnącemu ją na prowizorycznych noszach Charlie’emu swoje buty, a w nocy – świadoma, że mężczyzna tylko bez niej ma szansę na dotarcie do celu – odchodzi boso w głąb śnieżnej pustyni. Poświęca siebie, by Charlie mógł przeżyć.
Będąca teoretycznie animistką Kanaalaq, w praktyce okazuje się wcieleniem chrześcijańskiego przesłania o miłości bliźniego i gotowości oddania za niego życia. Dziewczyna ocala go podwójnie – dzięki jej poświęceniu, Charlie dociera do inuickiej osady,
a dzięki temu, czego się od niej nauczył, staje się lepszym człowiekiem. Za sprawą Kanaalaq otrzymuje też rozgrzeszenie dawnych win popełnionych podczas wojny, co symbolicznie oznajmione jest mu we śnie. Spotkanie z żyjącą w pełnej harmonii ze środowiskiem Inuitką jest też dla pilota spotkaniem z Absolutem, którego odnaleźć można jedynie w bliźnim i w naturze. Dzięki temu, w duchu postkolonialnych rozliczeń, dokonać się mogło odkupienie jego osoby jako reprezentanta zachodniej, najeźdźczej cywilizacji. By jednak ta alegoryczna opowieść o winie i nawróceniu spełnić mogła swoje dydaktyczne funkcje, wizerunek Kanaalaq musiał się zostać sprowadzony do wyidealizowanej figury Inuity. Bohaterka, która jest co prawda kobietą, w rzeczywistości pełni tutaj rolę istoty niemal bezpłciowej i duchowej. Jej cielesność – oprócz jednego aspektu, czyli choroby - nie ma w tej historii żadnego znaczenia. Porozumienie, które połączyło bohaterów, dokonuje się na płaszczyźnie, która nie jest zdeterminowana ani płciowością, ani pochodzeniem, ani światopoglądem – jest to wcielenie czystej idei braterstwa, której mężczyzna uczy się od Inuitki-anioła. Kanaalaq nie jest więc tak naprawdę reprezentantką rzeczywistych arktycznych społeczności, a ich wyidealizowanym obrazem, metaforą dziewiczej i mitycznej Północy, która dla Kanadyjczyków nigdy nie była „jedynie geologicznym, czy meteorologicznym zjawiskiem, które charakteryzuje śnieg i niska temperatura, ale fenomenem mającym ludzką strukturę (human construct)” . Kanalaaq jest odzwierciedleniem Ducha Północy, na który składa się zarówno środowisko naturalne, jak i zamieszkujący tam Inuici. Chorobę i śmierć dziewczyny można więc odczytywać również jako symboliczne, ale bardzo wyraźne ostrzeżenie dla białych ludzi, którzy wyalienowani ze świata przyrody, zaślepieni niesłabnącą chęcią zysku, niszczą środowisko naturalne, nie zdając sobie zupełnie sprawy, że rujnują tym samym także własne życie , gdyż są częścią ogólnoludzkiej, braterskiej wspólnoty.
Translation - English Although the indigenous people of Australia and Canada have been replaced by contrived images in the collective imagination, in no way does this mean that these images have not been disputed or that there has been no attempt to subvert them. Yet a peculiar paradox is that even when such discussions took place, they were within a discourse that was in fact dominated by the same representations. The result of this, accordingly, was the replacement of the pre-existing conventionalised images with others – only these were perhaps more refined and their subjects were given some say in their creation. An example of this might be the theme of encountering and trying to understand the Other, which is of course aimed at breaking through the negatively-charged images of the native, despite the fact that it is after all something of an oft-repeated cliché itself.
Yet is there anything reprehensible in this? Should every stereotype always be considered deplorable in moral terms? I am of the opinion that not all of the fabricated images concerning Aborigines and First Nations people have been or continue to be harmful for the representatives of these communities, regardless of any deviations from reality. For in Western discourse there is – aside from an undeniable element of contempt – a certain measure of admiration and respect for aboriginal peoples colonised long ago. This is apparent, for instance, in the ever more prevalent mythologizing of their culture, its depiction as being more authentic and honest than Western civilisation, whereas in reality of course no such comparisons can be made.
This idealised image of the native has been gaining popularity within mainstream discourse steadily since the late 1960s, when Western imperial societies were faced with a growing wave of political transformations in the form of decolonisation and successful independence movements in former colonies on the one hand, and gradual racial emancipation in multicultural post-colonial net-immigration countries on the other. Given the resulting milieu of coming to terms with the colonial past and the new principles of political correctness this implied, certain stereotypes regarding Australian and Canadian indigenous peoples had to undergo modification. These revamped images were assigned a defined social mission – they were meant to serve the lofty aims of a utopian multiculturalism project in which not only immigrants and their descendants would find a place for themselves, but also the native inhabitants of both countries.
Two films carrying out this mission are Rolf de Heer's The Tracker from 2002 and Charles Martin Smith's The Snow Walker from 2003. The plot in both cases revolves around an encounter with the Other which permanently changes the worldview of a representative of the colonising culture. In each of these films the encounter with a native inhabitant of the conquered lands causes the white protagonists' outlook to undergo a transformation that makes them more conscious and quite simply better people.
Despite the considerable psychological depth in the portrayal of the figures shown and the noble ideas of intercultural communication which constitute the central message here, it is difficult to disagree with the opinion that these films are based on rehashed conventions largely drawn from depictions of natives developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
In them there are traces, for instance, of the figure of the noble savage, whose chief qualities are his strong relationship with nature and his faithfulness to its eternal laws. The use of this motif here serves a different purpose than before – for the function of these films is to reckon with the sins of the invaders and offer post-colonial penance, which is intended to assuage the collective guilt of contemporary Australian and Canadian society and heal colonial-era wounds. Thus a white colonist (or descendant of one) stands opposite an indigenous representative of the conquered land, no longer to offer him redemption, but rather to attain redemption himself.
The Snow Walker and The Tracker are united by the theme of a journey shared by colonisers and colonised and the relationship that takes shape between them as it progresses, the result of which is an internal transformation in the coloniser. Employing the topos of the trek that changes a person's life of course involves placing the given story within a predictable narrative framework, and the didactic mission of both films requires that clear patterns be used. The image of the characters presented here is determined by the Christian tradition rooted in Western civilisation – both works bear features of a parable juxtaposing good with evil. As such they rely on certain simplifications in the characterisation of the central figures, whose personality traits are unambiguous and create a clear and coherent picture of them. This image is therefore imagined: the characters and their actions cannot be interpreted literally, since they are not a faithful likeness of reality, but an allegory tasked with changing that very reality.
In both films, the journey is a march towards the coloniser's eventual redemption thanks to the discovery that the Other is his fellow man, and the realisation that hitherto he has in fact been playing the role of the oppressor in the conquered land, whereas the savage to whom he was supposedly bringing progress and civilisation has been his victim. However, the resulting cleansing among the virgin landscapes of the colonised country demands a symbolic sacrifice of life – in the case of The Tracker it is the life of a hard-hearted perpetrator of atrocities, in The Snow Walker it is a representative of the native people.
The latter tells the story of a young Canadian bush pilot, Charlie Halliday (Barry Pepper), working the routes above the wilds of the Northwest Territory, who due to unforeseen circumstances is forced to cross the boundless arctic wilderness alongside a young and terminally ill Inuit woman. Charlie is a typical opinionated and cocksure racist who refers to the Inuit using the derogatory epithet husky.
In terms of character, there is a stark contrast between the personalites of Charlie and nineteen-year-old Kanaalaq (Annabella Pigattuk). In the film she is a representation of the noble characteristics of the Inuit and their vulnerability in the face of the white invaders' agressive expansion. Kanaalaq is a personification of the colonisers' collective guilt, which is why this figure is irreproachable in ethical terms. Accordingly, the girl's chief qualities are gentleness, industriousness, honesty, vigilance, patience that stretches the bounds of credibility, and most importantly – the ability to make the ultimate sacrifice for a fellow human being.
The girl teaches the pilot how to live in harmony with nature and survive in an environment with such difficult climatic conditions. Yet she imparts quite a lot more than this, for she makes the young man aware that true humanity resides in regarding your fellow human beings as your brothers. This idea of brotherhood is heavily emphasised in the film; thanks to his encounter with Kanaalaq, Charlie realises that he is a brother, not only to this young girl and the Inuit man he treated badly in one of the opening scenes of the film, but also to every other person on earth.
The Snow Walker is a loose adaptation of a short story by Farley Mowat, Walk Well, My Brother, first published in 1975 in a collection bearing the same name as the film . The message of both the literary original and the film, as the director himself stresses , can be summed up neatly in the title sentence of the short story. It is spoken by a terminally ill Kanaalaq as she gives her boots to Charlie, who has been dragging her along on a makeshift stretcher. Later that night – aware that only without her does the man stand a chance of reaching their destination – she walks off into the snowy wilderness barefoot. She sacrifices herself so that Charlie might survive.
Kanaalaq, theoretically an animist, in practise turns out to be a personification of the Christian message of love and willingness to sacrifice one's life for one's fellow man. The girl saves Charlie twice: thanks to her sacrifice, he reaches the Inuit settlement, and thanks to what he learned from her he becomes a better person. Through Kanaalaq he also receives absolution for his war-time transgressions, which is revealed to him symbolically in a dream. For the pilot, his encounter with the Inuit girl living in absolute harmony with the environment is also an encounter with the Absolute which can only be found in one's fellow man and in nature. In the spirit of coming to terms with the colonial past, it is thanks to this that he – as a representative of the invading Western civilisation – can be successfully redeemed. In order for this allegorical tale of guilt and repentance to fulfil its didactic function, Kanaalaq's image must be reduced to that of an idealised Inuit figure. The character, who is after all a woman, here takes on the role of an almost androgynous spiritual being. Her corporeality – apart from one aspect of it, i.e. her illness – is of no consequence at all in this story. The understanding that binds the characters takes place on a plane that is governed neither by gender, nor cultural background, nor worldview –it is a manifestation of the pure idea of brotherhood which the man learns from the Inuit girl/angel. Thus Kanaalaq is not in fact a representative of actual Arctic communities, but is rather an idealized picture of them, a metaphor for the untouched mythical North, which for Canadians has never been "a merely geological or meteorological phenomenon characterised by snow and low temperatures, but a human construct" . Kanaalaq is a reflection of the Spirit of the North, which is composed both of the natural environment and the Inuit who inhabit it. The girl's illness and death can therefore also be interpreted as a symbolic yet clear warning to white people who, alienated from the world of nature and blinded by an undiminishing desire for profit, destroy the natural environment, not fully realising that in doing so they are ruining their own lives , since they too are a part of a humanity-wide brotherly community.
