Michigan Law states that all pregnant women should be tested for HIV infection at least once during a pregnancy. It is recommended that you be tested up to 3 times during your pregnancy:
The first test is done during the first trimester (first 3 months of your pregnancy).
The second test is done at about 26 weeks of your pregnancy.
The third test is recommended at about 36 weeks of your pregnancy
if you or your partner took illegal drugs, spent time in jail, had another
sexual partner or tested positive for a sexually transmitted infection.
Our hospital follows these recommendations.
You should be tested for HIV infection because HIV can be passed from a mother to her baby during pregnancy. It is important to test every pregnant woman in order to protect her baby. We can treat women with medications that can prevent spreading HIV to her baby.
What is HIV?
HIV is the virus that causes AIDS.
HIV is a serious infection that can affect a woman’s health and her baby’s health.
HIV weakens the body’s defense against disease.
HIV can be passed from a mother to her baby:
• during pregnancy
• at delivery
• through breastfeeding
How is HIV spread?
Having unprotected sex.
Sharing needles or syringes.
Why is the test important?
All pregnant women may be at risk for HIV infection.
It is important for you to be tested for HIV more than once because it takes time for HIV to be found in your blood after you have been exposed. If you have not had the test in the first trimester and at 26 weeks (and 36 weeks if needed), an HIV Rapid Test will be offered when you come to the hospital before you deliver your baby.
It is important for us to find out if you have HIV so we can give you and your baby medications that can prevent spreading HIV to your baby. If you have HIV:
• without treatment, your baby has about a 1 in 4 chance of being infected.
• with treatment, your baby has about a 1 in 50 chance of being
infected.
What is an HIV Rapid Test?
An HIV Rapid test is done by taking blood from your vein.
At the hospital a rapid test is done so the results can be received
quickly before you deliver. The test is a screening test that provides
a preliminary result. A false-positive result can happen.
If the results of a rapid test are negative:
• No further testing is needed and it most likely means that you do
not have HIV infection.
If the results of a rapid test are positive:
• Your doctor will talk with you about the results.
• The HIV test will be repeated. This is to be sure you have the
infection. We use a better test that takes longer; to be sure we
get the best information.
• You have up to a 1 in 2 chance of having an HIV infection.
• If possible, you will be given medication during labor and
delivery to lessen the risk of passing HIV to your baby. Your
baby will receive the same medication after birth.
• You should wait to breastfeed until we can confirm that you do
not have the infection with the second test.
• You and your baby will be referred to a doctor who
specializes in HIV to begin on-going medical care.
What are your rights?
We will be asking for your verbal consent for the HIV test. Although it is recommended that you are tested, you do have the right to refuse this test anytime before the test is done. The only time we do not need consent to test you is if a healthcare worker is accidentally exposed to your blood or any other bodily fluids (bag of water, urine, etc.)
You may have the test done, without the use of your name (anonymously), at any Michigan Department of Community Health HIV counseling and testing center. Be aware that this may delay test results and medication you need before delivery.
HIV test results are confidential. There are laws to protect the rights of people with HIV and prevent discrimination. Only health care workers caring for you and your local health department will be given the results of your HIV test.

In times of emergency or extended periods of loss of conventional communication systems such as telephones and cell phones, Amateur Radio Operators can still talk to each other. And they can usually talk to city and county government officials who have amateur radio stations located in their Emergency Operations Centers.
What can Hams do?
Amateur Radio Operators can relay information about the condition and needs of the neighborhood to city and county Emergency Operations Centers equipped with amateur radio stations. This keeps local government officials informed about conditions in populated areas so they can make better decisions. Information helpful to citizens can also be relayed from the EOC to local neighborhoods with amateur radio operators, such as when relief
might be expected, special instructions for safety and sanitation, and other information unique to the emergency at hand. The system also serves to simply maintain contact with others in order to reduce the negative psychological impact of communication
isolation.
