Alberto se levantó con el dolor punzante de las ansias en el
estómago. Toda una vida de lucha contra ese gusano que iba tomando dimensiones insospechadas en su interior. Triste, huesudo y arrugado por el paso del tiempo, caminó entre los conocidos hacia el ataúd de Rosa para observar su tez blanca por última vez.Estaba impresionado por el maceramiento que daba la sensación de maniquí emanando de las telas blancas.
Tanto dolor en los ojos por llorar su ausencia le desgarraba el espíritu. De todos sus descendientes solo uno quedaba; y éste no dio nietos, por su evidente homosexualidad a la que tuvo que acostumbrarse, gracias a la insistencia de Rosa. Incluso, llegó a comer muchas veces en la misma mesa con la pareja de su hijo y, aunque le daba miedo reconocerlo, con el paso de los años hasta le había tomado cariño, soportando, quizás un abrazo público o una invitación a la playa, siempre en compañía de su esposa. ¿Qué sería de la vida, ahora, sin ella? El corazón estuvo siempre tan rojo a su lado, que pensar en volver a amar era inaudito, incluso inimaginable.
Atónito, desprotegido, con el cuerpo crucificado entre las paredes
del alma, el cerebro pesado continuaba viendo a la hermosa
mujer, como si el vidrio de la caja negra no existiera. La mente
empezó a volar hacia los confines del pasado, donde ambos disfrutaban los días del amor furtivo, el embarazo, los niños en la casa, danzando entre los muebles; la alegría de tanta bulla en un hogar caluroso, donde todos se vanagloriaban de dicha.
—¡Papá!, es hora de sacar a mamá —musitó Rolando a los oídos de su padre.
Alberto tomó la mano de su hijo y, con gesto de profundo martirio, caminó hacia la carroza mortuoria, observándola de reojo para no ver cómo Rosa, ya montada en el carro negro, era seguida por una multitud de adictos al dolor ajeno. Cerró los ojos e imploró a Dios le matara el gusano gigante que tomaba vida en su interior.
Antes de salir de la funeraria, observó, con pasmado asombro,
a una mujer amamantando a su hijo. No la conocía; de seguro era familiar de algún otro muerto que rondaba el local. En sus entrañas sintió envidia de ese niño que, iluso, disfrutaba del placer de mamar los pechos de su madre. Quiso ser aquel en ese momento,y se dio cuenta de cómo la ignorancia del futuro da una paz infinita. Meditabundo y casi babeando, tuvo una idea que cambiaría su existencia para siempre: anheló comenzar la vida siendo viejo.
Sería un viaje de la debilidad a la fortaleza, empezaría achaques
en el cuerpo con la certeza de ir rejuveneciendo. Transcurriría del extraño infantilismo de la vejez a la madurez de los cincuenta;
luego, a la angustia de los cuarenta y, después, a lo emprendedor
de los veinte. A partir de ese momento, se transformaría en un hombre inmaduro, y la gente le vería a los ojos diciendo: “¡Caramba qué joven estás hoy!” La vida sexual cambiaría totalmente, pues cada día la potencia aumentaría y pasaría de la asexualidad a la excitación excesiva de la adolescencia, y a la inconsciencia de los años de pubertad; incluso, habría esperanza soplando en la ventana, se levantaría sabiendo que ese instante realmente representaba un nuevo amanecer y que, al final de la jornada sería más joven que nunca y, en un abrir y cerrar de ojos, estaría inconsciente, succionando los dulces pechos de su madre; ignorante de lo que le rodeaba y, luego por arte de magia y casi por regalo divino moriría feliz y sin miedo. Ese devenir transitorio sería un verdadero milagro.
—¡Papá deja de mirar así a esa señora!... la estás asustando.
Camina, es hora de irnos al cementerio —dijo Rolando.

Casi se lanza a cuerpo entero contra el ataúd en descenso; si Rolando no lo hubiera presentido, Alberto estaría nadando en sangre sobre la caja negra. Se dijeron oraciones, se levantaron las manos hacia el Altísimo, con rosarios pequeños de madera donados por las beatas. ¡Dios te salve María, llena eres de gracia!,
retumbaba en el cerebro de este hombre. Voló de aquella salmodia para entrever las flores que tapaban el concreto rectangular, carente de calor, frío de tanto gris.
—¿Quién llamó a esto lápida? ¿De dónde salió este sádico
ritual de esperar la caída de la tapa de cemento sobre la persona
amada? —se preguntaba Alberto—. Hubiera sido mejor abandonar su cuerpo frente al mar y no soportar el estruendo que, cual cincel lapidario golpea mi pecho —imposible tanta pena dentro de un solo cuerpo; con el tiempo, describiría este momento como el método de obtención de carne molida, pues en este preciso instante pasaba por el molino tipo martillo con gruesas hojillas. ¿Cómo este calvario iba a cambiar su vida? Era una pregunta sin respuestas; solo pensó en la muerte, en el suicidio perfecto.

No había consuelo; el cielo oscurecía hasta semejar un eclipse
de sol en pleno invierno. El oxigeno se fue apagando, porque Alberto sabía que Rosa se llevó la mayor parte de él. El corazón rojo seguía latiendo sin encontrar un sonido afín.
—Papá, ¡es hora de irnos! Y, con gesto casi de clemencia, Rolando llevó a su padre a cuestas, al igual que Jesús cargó la cruz.
El regreso a casa, silencioso; sólo el resonar de las gotas sobre la calle. Cada uno volaba entre los techos de sus ausencias. Al llegar, la puerta se abrió y el hombre de sienes blancas, sin pensarlo siquiera, desplomó su cuerpo sobre la cama matrimonial, acoplándolo paulatinamente a la posición fetal. No habló, no comió, solo sintió la presencia inequívoca de un tronco ausente en toda la longitud del cuarto.
Durante el resto de la noche, se levantó tocando una almohada carente de cabeza recostada. Se colmó del olor de la cabellera de
Rosa, que se colaba entre las sábanas. Colocó la almohada en toda la extensión de sus brazos, afianzando su cuerpo a los pechos de la muerta.
Las paredes blancas se tornaron gris claro con ciertos
matices violetas y, en todo el ambiente, el perfume a dolor fue adquiriendo forma como esencia de azahar. El dilema de la existencia se agrandó a tal magnitud que, por primera vez en mucho tiempo, descubrió los desperfectos de su vida, entendió los errores del sistema, en ese recóndito espacio llamado tierra. Morir es nacer, retumbaba en las esquinas.
La mente viajó a una profunda interpretación de la supervivencia. Aparentemente, esta conducta característica de la naturaleza tiene sus bases en el hecho comprobable de destrucción de todo lo más pequeño a nosotros, lo indefenso, por instinto anímalo, simplemente, oportunismo. Así, la planta se aprovecha del sol y de la lluvia, el suelo se vuelve fértil con ella; luego, la vaca se alimenta del pasto, nosotros la matamos, saciamos nuestra gula hasta morir en manos de un desconocido. ¿Quién, en el ciclo evolutivo se aprovecha de nosotros? —“La muerte”, respondieron sus neuronas.
Esa que se nutre de nosotros para saciar su apetito evolutivo. Pero¿quién obtiene ventaja de la muerte? ¿Quién se alimenta de ella?
Estaba en coma, donde la mente transfiguraba la realidad del ambiente. No se hablaba de comida, ni de sueño, ni de amor; sólo se sentía una intensa fragancia a muerte traviesa, atravesando los infinitos rincones del piano sin pianista.

Alberto got up with the stabbing pain of anxiety in his stomach. A whole life struggling against this worm that was taking on unimaginable dimensions in his interior. Sad, bony and wrinkled by the passage of time, he walked past the familiar faces to Rosa’s coffin to observe her white complexion for the last time. He was shocked by the embalming and make-up that made her look as though she were a mannequin emerging from amongst the white fabric.
The pain in his eyes caused by mourning her absence tore his spirit. Of all of their descendants there was only one left and he hadn’t given them grandchildren due to his evident homosexuality which Alberto had been forced to get used to, thanks to Rosa’s insistence. He’d even eaten at the same table as his son’s partner on several occasions, and, although it frightened him to admit it, as the years had gone by Alberto had even begun to care for him, bearing a public hug or an invitation to the beach, always in his wife’s company. What would become of his life now, without her? His heart was always so red by her side that thinking about loving again was beyond belief, unimaginable.
Astonished, vulnerable, with his body crushed between the walls of his soul, his heavy brain compelled him to continue looking at the beautiful woman, as if the glass over the top of the black box wasn’t there. His mind began to fly towards the confines of the past, where they had enjoyed days of furtive love, pregnancy, children at home, dancing amongst the furniture; the joy of so much bustle in a warm home, where everyone boasted of their happiness.
- Papá! It’s time to take Mamá – whispered Rolando into his father’s ear.
Alberto took his son’s hand and, with a gesture of profound suffering, walked towards the hearse, observing from the corner of his eye so as not to see how Rosa, already in the black car, was followed by a multitude of people addicted to the pain of others. He closed his eyes and prayed to God to kill the giant worm that was coming to life in his innards.
Before leaving the funeral parlour he observed in stunned amazement a woman breastfeeding her son. He didn’t know her; she must have been a relative of another dead person who was hanging around the place. Deep in his guts he envied the child who, naïve, was enjoying the pleasure of suckling his mother’s breasts. In that moment Alberto wanted to be the infant, and he realised how ignorance of the future provided infinite peace. Absorbed deep in thought and almost drooling, he had an idea that would alter his existence forever; he wished to live his life in reverse, starting out as an old man.
It would be a journey from weakness to strength; bodily ailments would arise only to disappear. He would pass from the strange infantilism of old age to the maturity of his fifties; later, from the anguish of his forties and, after, to his enterprising twenties. From that moment, he would become an immature man; people would look at his eyes and say: “Caramba! You look so young today!” His sex life would change completely, each day his potency would increase and he would pass from asexuality to the excessive excitement of adolescence and to the irresponsibility of puberty; there would even be hope on the wind; he would get up each day knowing that that instant really did represent a new dawn and that, at the end of the week he would be younger than ever. In the blink of an eye, he would be unconscious, sucking at the sweet breasts of his mother; ignorant of his surroundings and, later, by magic and almost as a divine gift he would die happy and without fear. This transitory evolution would be a true miracle.
- Papá! Stop looking at that woman! You’re frightening her. Walk, it’s time for us to go to the cemetery – said Rolando.

He almost threw his body onto the coffin as it was being lowered; if Rolando hadn’t sensed it coming, Alberto would have been swimming in blood on the black box. Prayers were recited; hands holding small wooden rosary beads that had been donated by nuns were raised to the Almighty, “Hail Mary, full of grace!” resounded in Alberto’s brain. He flew away from the psalmody to make out the flowers which covered the concrete rectangle, absent of warmth, cold from so much grey.
- Who thought to call this a tombstone? Where did this sadistic ritual of waiting for a concrete cover to fall on your loved one come from? – Alberto asked himself. It would have been better to abandon her body by the sea and not to have to hear the crash of the stone whose chiselled inscription beat against his chest – it was impossible for one body to contain so much pain. With time, he would come to describe this moment as the process of mincing meat; in that precise instant he was passing through the hammering mincer with its thick blades.
How was this torture going to change his life? It was a question without answers; he thought only of death, of the perfect suicide.

There was no consolation; the sky darkened until it resembled a solar eclipse in the middle of summer. The oxygen around Alberto was disappearing, because he knew that Rosa had taken the biggest part of him. The red heart kept beating without finding a kindred sound.
- Papá, it’s time for us to go! And, with a gesture of almost-mercy, Rolando carried his father, just as Jesus had carried the cross.
The return home, silent; only the echo of the drops falling on the street. The two men were separated, trapped in their own worlds of grief. At their arrival the door opened and the white-templed man, without even thinking about it, threw his body onto the marital bed, gradually folding himself into the foetal position. He didn’t speak, he didn’t eat, he felt only the unequivocal presence of an absent mate in the length of the room.
During the rest of the night, Alberto woke up touching a pillow, which bore the imprint of a resting head. He was filled with the smell of Rosa’s hair, which had slipped between the sheets. Placing the pillow along the length of his arms, he pressed his body to the dead woman’s breasts. The white walls turned grey with shades of violet and, in the surrounding air, the perfume of pain began to take on the scent of the essence of orange blossom. The dilemma of existence became so large that, for the first time in a long time, Alberto was aware of the imperfections in his life, he understood the errors in the system, on this remote land called Earth. “To be born is to die”, resounded in the corners.
His mind travelled to a profound interpretation of survival. Apparently, this characteristic conduct of nature had its basis in the demonstrable fact of the destruction of the smallest of us, the defenceless, through animal instinct or, simply, opportunism. So, the plant takes advantage of the sun and the rain, the soil is made fertile by the plant; later, the cow feeds on the grass, we kill the cow, we satiate our gluttony until dying at the hands of a stranger. Who, in the evolutionary cycle takes advantage of us? – “Death” responded his neurons. It feasts on us to slake its evolutionary appetite. But, who benefits from death? Who feeds on it?
He was in a coma, his mind transfiguring the reality of his surroundings. It didn’t speak of food, of sleep, or of love; it only perceived the intense fragrance of mischievous death, the infinite corners of the piano without a pianist.

RESUMEN
Objetivo Identificar factores de riesgo asociados al uso de drogas lícitas e ilícitas en estudiantes adolescentes de ambos sexos cursantes de educación básica y diversificada de instituciones públicas diurnas. Métodos Con base a un estudio descriptiva, de campo y transversal fue realizado estudio en el año 2002 en el Municipio Naguanagua, Estado Carabobo, Venezuela. Se utilizo un cuestionario anónimo auto aplicado denominado Test Drug Use Screening Inventory (DUSI) para adolescentes versión Venezuela, fue respondido por una muestra probabilística sistemática estratificada por año de estudio de estudiantes adolescentes de 12 a 17 años de edad de ambos sexos, de dos instituciones educativas públicas diurnas de educación básica y diversificada. Resultados Las áreas de riesgo alto asociadas al uso de drogas lícitas e ilícitas son las de familia y salud mental; mientras que en las de riesgo moderado se encuentran las áreas de recreación, conducta y escuela; y las de riesgo bajo pares, habilidades sociales y uso de drogas. Los resultados del Índice de Severidad Total, es alto. Esto es un indicador de que el adolescente venezolano presenta más riesgo de uso de drogas lícitas e ilícitas, pero al mismo tiempo presenta menos uso de drogas. Lo que pudiera indicar cómo la presencia de factores de protección interactúan con los factores de riesgo, para modificar el efecto de éstos.

ABSTRACT
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to identify risk factors associated with illicit and licit drug use in male and female adolescents from 12 to 17 years of age studying in public primary and secondary schools.
METHODS: A descriptive, cross-sectional fieldwork study was carried out in 2002 in the Municipality of Naguanagua, Carabobo State, Venezuela. A version of an anonymous self-reporting questionnaire - “The Drug Use Screening Inventory” (DUSI) - created for Venezuelan adolescents, was used. The DUSI was responded to by a systematic probability sample of students stratified according to school year-level, sex and age. Samples were taken from two public educational institutions that provide primary and secondary education.
RESULTS: High risk factors associated with illicit and licit drug use were mental health and family; moderate risk factors were recreation, behaviour and school; of equal low risk were the factors of social habits and drug use. Total Severity Index scores were high.
CONCLUSION: The results indicate that Venezuelan adolescents present a high risk of illicit and licit drug use but at the same time present low rates of drug use. This may indicate that protective factors that are present interact with and modify the effect of risk factors.

My background in anthropology and the fact that I have travelled widely and lived overseas have made me sensitive to the importance of cultural and linguistic differences. This value strongly informs my practice as a translator as I take the approach that my role is not only to facilitate communication between languages but also to act as an intercultural mediator and to localise target texts.

Cuento con una maestría en traducción e interpretación en la Universidad de Monash, Australia. Aunado a esto, poseo demostrada experiencia en los aspectos teóricos y prácticos del lenguaje.
Soy un profesional responsable, capaz de analizar diferentes tipos de texto. De hecho, en la actualidad, manejo diversos tipos de traducciones, a saber: títulos, antecedentes policiales, certificados de nacimiento y cualquier tipo de documentación gubernamental relacionada al proceso migratorio. Así mismo, cuento con experiencia en textos médicos, académicos, de contabilidad, arquitectura y manuales de instrucciones. Por último, mi pasión por la literatura y escritura creativa me permiten trabajar como traductora literaria.
Mi educación en antropología y el hecho de haber vivido en un país de habla española por más de seis años, me han hecho consciente de la importancia de las diferencias culturales y lingüísticas.
