English to Chinese: Mass Media and Consumer Culture: a Case Study on the Twilight Saga Films
Source text - English The advance on information technology has granted mass media access to most population on the globe. Thanks to their constant innovation and profound influence, these mass media have become an effective and favourable way for producers to sell and advertise their commodities in present-day society. This study aims to examine the relation between media and consumption through the case study of the Twilight Saga films, which is a fine example of low-budget yet successful movies in Hollywood. In fact, past studies usually focus on some well-funded blockbusters produced by mainstream movie studios, whereas few were done in the low-budget category. Regarding the research methodology, an analysis of documentation and a web-based questionnaire are employed to gather data from the perspective of the film producer and that of the audience/consumers respectively. Findings indicate that the relationship between media and consumption, or rather that between film producers and consumers, is by no means equal, as the former can always achieve dominance over the latter by manipulating the signs and differences behind objects. Meanwhile, it is implied that the influence of mass media not only has crossed national and cultural boundaries, but also is extending.
Translation - Chinese 随着信息科技的发展日新月异,人们的生活包括工作和娱乐与大众传播媒体的关系愈趋密切,正因为此,一些具技术革新能力和广泛影响力的媒体逐渐变成了品牌生产商用来宣传和推销商品的新宠。本研究旨在探讨大众媒体与消费的关系,并以好莱坞当红的电影系列《暮光之城》作个案研究。过去,对该方面的研究对象往往是一些主流电影制片商制作且耗资庞大的巨片。然而,《暮光之城》虽是小成本制作,但其卖座程度却不逊于前者。本研究的数据收集从两个层面进行,即电影制片商和观众/消费者的角度。前者的数据由具公信力的组织所提供;后者则透过网上问卷调查来收集。研究结果表明,媒体与消费间的关系,说得更准确些应是电影制片商与消费者间的关系并不是对等的。前者往往会透过操纵商品的符号价值来直接驱动或间接影响后者的追逐心理和购买行为。同时,本研究亦体现出现今大众传播媒体的影响力已足以跨越地理和不同文化间的界限,并有继续扩大的趋向。

A Cantonese native speaker, I hold a Bachelor of Arts in English (Business Communication) from Sun Yat-Sen University, and a Master of Arts in European Culture from University College London. I started my language career in 2012 in London, as an liaison interpreter (Cantonese <> English) for the National Health Service. From then on, I took on translation jobs on a part-time basis for three years, and worked in-house at the University of Macao for three years and a half. I have now been working in the translation industry for more than eight years, specialising in education, business, culture and media.
In 2019, I founded Vanguage Limited in Macao, providing simultaneous interpreting, translation and copywriting services to the public and private sector in the Greater Bay Area.
