1.1 Introduction
Surgery is the main modality of local treatment for breast cancer. Surgery and/or radiotherapy can control local-regional disease in the majority of patients. However, more than 60% will ultimately die due to distant recurrence of disease.
Two types of systemic adjuvant therapy have been used increasingly over the last twenty years to successfully reduce the rate of breast cancer recurrence and death. Adjuvant chemotherapy involves a combination of cytotoxic anticancer drugs; adjuvant hormone therapy deprives cancer cells of the hormone estrogen which some breast cancer cells need to grow. These therapeutic modalities are complementary and are often used in combination.

La cirugía es la modalidad más frecuente para el tratamiento local de cáncer de mama. La cirugía o radioterapia pueden controlar la enfermedad local o regional en la mayoría de las pacientes. Sin embargo, más del 60 % en última instancia mueren debido a la recidiva a distancia de la enfermedad.
En los últimos 20 años dos tipos de tratamientos complementarios generalizados se han utilizado con mayor frecuencia para reducir exitosamente las tasas de recidiva y la muerte de cáncer de mama. La quimioterapia complementaria implica la combinación de fármacos antineoplásicos citotóxicos. La hormonoterapia complementaria priva a las células cancerosas del estrógeno que algunas necesitan para proliferar.
Estos tratamientos son complementarios y son generalmente utilizados en combinación.
