sonnet 18
Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer's lease hath all too short a date:
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimmed,
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance, or nature's changing course untrimmed:
But thy eternal summer shall not fade,
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow'st,
Nor shall death brag thou wand'rest in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou grow'st,
So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

أأقولُ أنت نهارُ صيفٍ مشـــرقِ بل أنت أجملُ منــــه حسنكِ ريّقُ
فالصيفُ فيه للعواصفِ غضبــةٌ تذري بناشئةِ الـــبراعم تمحــــقُ
والصيفُ محدودُ النوالِ قصــيرُه يمضي سريعاً لا يـــدوم فيُقــدقُ
والصيف قد تغدو لهيباً شمســــه طوراً، وطوراً تبــــرُها يترنــّق
والحسنُ يبليه الزمانُ بمـــــــــرِّه أو تعتريه الحادثاتُ فيُمحــــــــقُ
لكنّ حسنك سرمدي صيفـــــــــُه لا ينقضي لمصيفِ حسنك رونق
والموتُ لن يختالَ فخراً قائـــــلاً ها أنتِ هائمـــــــــةٌ وظلي مطبقُ
فلقدخلدتم في قوافيّ التـــــــــــــي بقيت روائعُ نظمـــــــــــــها تتألق
ما دامتِ الأبصارُ تبصر ما سرى في صدرِ أنسانٍ هــــــــواءٌ يطلقُ
سيظل شعري خالداً بين الـــورى وبه خلودك في الدنـــــــــا يتحقق

Faster than fairies faster than witches,
Bridges and houses, hedges and ditches;
And charging along like troops in a battle,
All through the meadows the horses and cattle:
All of the sights of the hill and the plain
Fly as thick as driving rain;
And ever again in a wink of an eye,
Painted stations whistle by.
Here is a child who clambers and scrambles,
All by himself and gathering brambles;
Here is a tramp who stands and gazes;
And there is the green for stringing the daisies!
Here is a cart run away in the road
Lumping along with man and load;
And here is a mill and there is a river:
Each a glimpse and gone for ever!

هذي المنازلُ و القنواتُ بارقـــةً هذي الجسورُ وألوانٌ من الشجرِ
مرّت كلمحٍ ففاقت كلَّ ساحـرةٍ وكلَّ جنِّيَّةٍ تمضي بلا أثـــــــــــرِ
ومثلُ جند الوغى مرّت على عجلٍ خضرُ المروج وجمع الخيلِ والبقر
وكلُّ منظرِ تلٍّ لاح أوسهـــــــلٍ ولّى كأن رؤاه وابلُ المطـــــــــرِ
وكلُّ حينٍ محطاتٌ ملونـــــــــةٌ تلوح خاطفةً في ومضةِ البصــــرِ
وذا غلامٌ على العُلّيق في حـذرٍ يعلـو ليقطفَ منه يانعَ الثمــــــــر
وسائلٍ شخصت عيناه مندهشـاً وخضرةٌ زانها عقدٌ من الزهـــــرِ
وثمَّ ناقلةٌ في الدربِ في صخبٍ تمرُّ مسرعةً بالقومِ في سفـــــــــِر
وتلك طاحونةٌ لاحت وذا نهَــر وكلها ومضت ونأت عن النظــــــر
