Translation - English 1.1 Introduction to Hybrid Powertrain Concepts
HEVs are a subclass of hybrid vehicles which are capable of using, in addition to electrical energy storage systems, alternative systems such as flywheel energy storage [8], or compressed gas in the case of hydraulic hybrid vehicles [9]. In the following work, these non-electric hybrid vehicle concepts are not discussed, as while they increase powertrain efficiency, unlike PHEVs, they cannot substitute fuel for electrical energy as the traction energy source. HEVs have, in addition to the fuel based energy store (natural gas, gasoline, diesel, hydrogen) an electrical energy store, which is normally an electrochemical battery or a supercapacitor [10]. This electrical energy store supports bidirectional power transfer; i.e. it can both store and deliver energy. For PHEVs and most HEVs, this energy store is a battery and the fuel based energy store a petrol tank. In the following work, discussion is limited to (P)HEVs of this type.
There are a variety of different HEV concepts, which can be classified in terms of their level of hybridization, or their powertrain configuration. HEV powertrain configurations differ in the number of electric machines they incorporate and in the manner in which they are physically connected to the combustion engine and wheels. The level of hybridization is defined by the power rating of the electric machine and battery capacity. Increasing levels of hybridization brings benefits in the area of fuel economy, but typically at the expense of rising fabrication costs. Conventional vehicles have the lowest level of hybridization (powertrain without electric components), and electric vehicles like BEVs with only electric powertrain components have the highest levels of hybridization. Between them come, in order of level of hybridization, are: micro HEVs, mild HEVs, and full HEVs. No standardised definitions for the levels exist, and the definitions that can be found in literature are inconsistent. A typical classification is indicated in Table I.
Micro HEVs support an engine start/stop function to reduce engine idle times and limited kinetic energy regeneration. Mild HEVs have a higher level of hybridization and support both energy regeneration at higher loads, and load point shifting of the engine. Full HEVs with their more powerful electric motor can, in addition, drive electrically. Vehicles with higher battery capacities have a battery charger onboard, which permits battery charging by connection to the electrical grid. HEVs with this charging capability are known as plug-in HEVs (PHEVs).

Successfully combining the role of both pianist and conductor, XXXX’s list of collaborations is a roll call of more than forty of the world’s leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra; London Festival Orchestra; BBC Symphony Orchestra; Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra; Moscow Chamber Orchestra; Wiener Kammerochester; Prague Chamber Orchestra; Brasitlava Symphony Orchestra; New Jersey Philharmonic Orchestra; Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra; New York Philharmonic Orchestra; Gdansk Baltic Philharmonic Orchestra; Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra; National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba; Rumanian National Philharmonic Orchestra; Bulgarian National Symphony Orchestra; Kazan Philharmonic Orchestra; Iasi Philharmonic Orchestra; Pilsen Radio Symphony Orchestra; Brno Philharmonic Orchestra; and the Bari Symphony Orchestra.
XXXX’s performance tours have taken him around Europe and across the Atlantic, performing in the greatest concert halls of Spain (Palau de la Música de Barcelona, Auditorio Nacional de Madrid, Auditorio Manuel de Falla, Auditorio de Zaragoza, Fundación Juan March, etc.); France (Sala Gaveau, Sala Pleyel); England (Wigmore Hall, Purcell Room, Barbican); Germany (Konzerthaus Dortmund, Gasteig Philharmonie, Beethovenhalle); Austria (Brahmssaal, Konzerthaus Wien); Holland, Belgium (Palais des Beaux Arts); Romania (Ateneul Roman, Radio Hall, Constanta National Opera House, Iasi Philharmonic Hall, Sala Palatului); Hungary (Palace of Arts - Bartok National Hall); Bulgaria (Sofia Concert Hall, Varna Philharmonic, Plovdiv Philharmonic); The Czech Republic (Smetana Hall); Slovakia; Greece (Megaron); Portugal (Fundaçao Gulbekian); Poland (Warsaw National Philharmonic Hall, Gdansk Baltic Philharmonic Hall); Russia (Moscow State Conservatory Concert Hall, Tchaikovsky Concert Hall, Kazan Concert Hall); Ukraine (Lviv Opera House, Lviv Philharmonic Hall, Kiev National Philharmonic Hall); the U.S.A (New Jersey Performing Arts Center, Weill Recital Hall, Avery Fischer Hall, Meymandi Concert Hall); and Cuba (Auditorio Amadeo Roldán, Auditorio de San Francisco de Asís).
In addition to performing and composing, XXXX’s musical pursuits include a captivating quest for lost or hidden musical treasures; standout discoveries including the discovery, in 1999, of previously unpublished and unfinished manuscripts of Enrique Granados’ Concerto for Piano and Orchestra. Subsequently edited and completed by XXXX, the work was premiered worldwide by XXXX himself, accompanied by the Lviv Symphony Orchestra, at the Lviv Philharmonic Concert Hall, Ukraine in 2010 - the same year the work was published by the Editorial Boileu Publishing House, Barcelona.
Soon after came the first-ever full orchestral recording of the concerto, accompanied by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra under the baton of maestro Martyn Brabbins for the British record label, Hyperion Records; and the first-ever full orchestral recording of Isaac Albéniz’ Rapsodia Española op.70, orchestrated by Albéniz, in its original version - another piece uncovered by XXXX.

Fruits of XXXX’s labour for the instauration of Spanish classical musical heritage, forthcoming recordings of more than ten Romantic conciertos for piano and orchestra by Spanish composers will include Joaquin Malats’ Concerto for Piano and Orchestra in A Minor, discovered and orchestrated by XXXX, and recently edited for the first time along with his complete works in 6 volumes (during Editorial Boileu’s centenary year); Manuel de Falla’s Noches En Los Jardines de España; and Joaquim Cassadó’s La Fantasia Hispania.
Commanding a vast repertoire of more than forty concertos for piano and orchestra by Spanish composers (Granados, Albéniz, Blancafort, Falla, Cassadó, J. Gómez, E. Serrano, Molleda, etc), Ukrainian composers (Kosenko, Lyudkyevich, Bilash, Barvinsky) and others including Ástor Piazzolla, Xaver Scharwenka, Nikolai Medtner and Ignaz Paderewsky), XXXX champions little known and oft neglected hidden treasures of Spanish and International Classical Music repertoire, showcasing them in his performances as a solo pianist, in Chamber Music, and as an orchestral director.
Since his joining in 2007, XXXX has held the position of Chief Conductor of the XXXX, touring extensively with the orchestra across Spain, Greece, the Czech Republic, Russia, and Slovakia. Since 2008, XXXX has also held the position of Artistic Director of the International Lviv Summer Music Festival, "Improvizacia", working alongside world-class soloists including Andrei Gavrilov (the complete works for piano and orchestra by Beethoven) and Woitjek Mrozek.
XXXX’s extensive list of collaborations with world-class artists includes Ivry Gitlis; Ruggiero Ricci; Martha Argerich; Lorin Maazel; Roby Lakato; Giora Feidman; Valentin Georghiu; Al di Meola. XXXX has been coached by eminent performers and educators including Rosa Mª Kucharsky; Leonid Brumberg; Aquiles Delle Vigne; Philip Fowke; Joanna McGregor; Carmen Bravo de Mompou; Joseph Banowetz; Vladimir Ashkenazy; Diego Mason; Ricardo Muti y Andrei Gavrilov; the latter quickly becoming XXXX’s close mentor and providing extensive coaching.
At the age of 25, XXXX won a professorship at the Piano Chair of Escuela Superior de Música de Cataluña (ESMUC). Since then, has been giving master classes, speeches and presentations at schools and leading academic institutions around the world, combining his composing and performing activities with teaching, musicological research, and music publishing, in collaboration with the world renowned publishing house, Editorial Boileu of Barcelona. For Editorial Boileu, XXXX is currently editing and restoring, for first-time publication, the complete orchestral works of Enrique Granados, Isaac Albéniz, Joaquim Cassadó, Julio Gómez, and others.
In 1995, XXXX teamed up with Russian Cellist Svetlana Tovstukha to form Duo Cantabile – the pair achieving, through more than 15 years now playing together, a unique, rich sound and sublime expressiveness.
Since 2008, XXXX has also joined forces with the Ukrainian violinist Nataliya Borysyuk in Duo Leopolis, and the "Granados Piano Trio" ensemble.
In 2001 he started the Orquesta de la Sociedad de Conciertos de Barcelona, whose performances culminated in the revival of Ástor Piazzolla’s Ópera-Tango "María de Buenos Aires", rereleased in its orchestral form after having been completely rewritten from a transcription of actual recordings made by Piazzolla, in the absence of the original score.
As a composer, XXXX’s portfolio lists impressive works spanning opera, chamber music, instrument solos, conciertos, and film scores - outstanding among which are the recent publication of "Violintango Concerto" (concertó for violin and orchestra premiered in 2010, Ed. Boileau); "Suite Exotique" (Ed. Boileau), for Cello solo; "Obertura Festiva, sobre temas populares ucranianos" (premiered at the 3rd Improvizacia festival with Lviv Symphony); "Obertura Catalana: El bosque de las hadas" (premiered by the Gdansk Baltic Philharmonic in 2007); and the opera "Don Juan, príncipe de las tinieblas"; premiered in Barcelona in 2005 with a libretto by Josep Palau y Fabra.

Translation - English Dear Sir / Madam ,
My name is XXX. Thank you for this opportunity to introduce myself and convey what a chance to join your university would mean to me.
As an Engineer, from the very beginning of my studies I have been drawn to issues relating to sustainability, and participation in ecological activities and campaigns. My professional experience has centered on environmental impact assessment and risk analysis processes, and applying qualitative and quantitative techniques. Eventually, when I discovered SEA, my mindset and philosophy changed completely.
For my PhD, I am currently using a systematic approach to develop a protocol for the appraisal of infrastructure project planning on renewable energy, and addressing SEA as a procedural tool for sustainability; taking as case studies: policy formulation in Mexico; the national strategy in Mexico for the transition to sustainable energy; and the sustainable exploitation of energy in Mexico. Gaining a place at the University of Twente would be an exceptional opportunity for me to further my research in these areas in a world-leading institution; learning, working, and exchanging ideas and experience with the best and brightest in the areas of Environmental Assessment and Sustainable Development.
The University of Twente is the ideal environment for me to enhance my analytical capacity in spatial planning processes, strengthen my collaborative and teamwork skills in inter-disciplinary groups, build partnerships, widen my adaptive capacity to explore and make optimal use of Geographic Information Systems, further my knowledge of how models and spatial decision support systems can be used to help to identify and structure the problems, and improve my strategic thinking in general.
Beyond my development as an individual scientist and researcher, it would enhance my potential contribution to society, and facilitate my wider, more general development as a global citizen.
For many years, the prospect of one day being able study to the University of Twente has been a great source of inspiration and motivation to me, and an offer is something I would prize for the special opportunity that it represents.
Yours Sincerely,
