British eating habits are regularly lambasted by other nations and our own press, but serving food without jingoism and hypocrisy means we can enjoy it so much more
Last week dragged with it yet more news of the UK's gastronomic inadequacy and ignorance of such nebulous concepts as "nutrition" and "balanced diet". It's been 20 years since the seemingly arbitrary five-a-day rule was conceived be a group of fruit and veg companies in California, but it would seem as we Brits haven’t taken this particular stroke of marketing genius to belly, for we eat the fewest vegetables in all of Europe.
Not only are we not eating our greens, according to a recent study over half of the meals eaten out in this country are – gasp! – fast food.
As ever, the press cherry-pick the naughty side of fast food and have us believe that we're scarfing tonnes of cheese-slapped patties flopped between two halves of a bun with a squirt of acrid gunge and a side order of fries. This is, of course, bunk. Pret a Manger sells 50,000 pots of porridge a week – that's over 2.5m a year.

Привычки Британцев в еде все время резко критикуются другими странами и даже нашими собственными СМИ, но ведь, подавая еду без излишнего патриотизма и лицемерия, можно наслаждаться ею намного больше.
Последняя неделя принесла еще больше новостей о неуместности гастрономических привычек Британцев и их невежестве в таком размытом понятии как «питание» и «сбалансированный рацион». Прошло вот уже 20 лет с тех пор, как кучкой мелких торговцев из Калифорнии, специализирующихся на продаже морковки и прочей зелени, было введено это условное «правило пяти» (Правило употреблять пять порций фруктов и овощей в сутки). Однако, может создаться впечатление, что мы не приняли этот гениальный маркетинговый ход близко к «желудку», т.к. из всех европейцев мы едим меньше всего овощей и фруктов.
Мы не только не потребляем растительную пищу, но и по результатам недавно проведенного исследования, половина еды, потребляемой нами вне дома, приходится– О ужас! – на фаст фуд.
Как всегда, журналисты преподносят наши слабости к фаст-фуду в отрицательном свете, заставляя нас поверить в то, что мы пожираем тоны жареных котлет с расплавленным сыром в булочке, приправленных вонючей гадостью и гарниром из картошки фри. Это, конечно же, чушь. Pret A Manger (Британская сеть быстрого питания) продает 50,000 порций овсянки в неделю, что составляет более 2,5 миллионов в год.
