English to Italian: An Open Letter to the Governments of Europe Detailed field: Government / Politics
Source text - English We, the front-line volunteers who for months now have been helping thousands of refugees, call on all the governments of Europe to act immediately and decisively to alleviate the situation. There are tens of thousands of people moving through south-eastern Europe and the current capacities of volunteer-based help sites are seriously challenged. Given also the rapid approach of winter and problems at various borders, we feel there is a real danger that the situation will lead to serious medical problems and likely deaths among the refugee community.
Every person has the legal right to seek asylum. If Europe is not able to provide safe and legal routes for asylum-seekers, it is obliged to provide aid to those who took the dangerous route. We do not want to see a single refugee dying while waiting in endless queues at European borders, literally in our own hands.
Volunteers have been providing a wide range of activities so far, in many places completely replacing the absent government facilities and aid. We are distributing food and water, undertaking crowd management, providing critical information about registration and borders, referring vulnerable people to UNHCR or medical services, caring for children, managing stocks of clothing and blankets, cleaning waste, raising funds and providing shelter to the most vulnerable few.
We have been doing all this for months in Lesvos, Athens, Gevgelija, Budapest, Röszke, Belgrade, Eidomeni, Hegyeshalom, Nickelsdorf, Wien, Salzburg, Heiligenkreuz, Zakány, Botovo, Calais, Preševo, Berkasovo, Bregana, Harmica, Trnovec, Mursko Središće, Bapska, Opatovac and a number of other places around Europe. We have proven that volunteers can do a lot, but we will be unable to keep thousands of people warm once the winter weather closes in.
Winter is coming quickly and we all have just a few days to respond in a humane way.
We call on all European countries to provide immediate help to all those countries affected by the refugee crisis, instead of helping those countries that are building fences.
We call for the building of safe reception and transit centres with facilities that can cope with the harsh winter conditions of the region.
We also call for humanitarian aid to be delivered to the people that need it, for the provision of appropriate medical services and for the coordination of all efforts on a pan-European level.
We also call on the EU to immediately implement other mechanisms which aim to provide safe passage to the EU.
This is advance notice to all of you, the leaders of Europe, that people will be freezing to death soon on our borders if you do not act now.
We have done our best up to this point and we will continue to help for as long as is necessary. But now it is your turn, governments of Europe. Please respond and demonstrate to the world that humanity is still at the core of European values.
Do you agree with our letter and want to help? All organisations are happy to receive any kind of donation, but right now we need more. Please call, email or visit your government, your MP, your ministers or your president and ask them, "What are you going to do to prevent suffering and death among refugees?" If they don't answer, or their response is not sufficient, call, email or visit them again. As long as is necessary.
Translation - Italian Lettera aperta a tutti i governi d'Europa da parte dei volontari
Noi, i volontari di prima linea, che ormai da mesi stiamo aiutando migliaia di profughi, chiediamo a tutti i governi d'Europa di agire immediatamente e con decisione per alleviare la situazione. Ci sono decine di migliaia di persone in movimento attraverso l'Europa sud orientale e la capienza dei siti di accoglienza basati sul volontariato stanno affrontando una durissima sfida. Dato inoltre l'arrivo ormai prossimo dell'inverno e dati i problemi sui diversi confini, sentiamo il reale pericolo di un rapido peggioramento della situazione che potrebbe portare a gravi problemi di salute e probabilmente anche alla morte dei profughi.
Tutte le persone hanno il diritto legale di cercare asilo. Se l'Europa non è in grado di provvedere ad un passaggio sicuro dei richiedenti asilo attraverso vie legali, è obbligata a dare aiuto a chi deve intraprendere le strade pericolose. Non vogliamo vedere nemmeno uno dei profughi morire, mentre aspetta in code infinite ai confini d'Europa, letteralmente fra le nostre mani.
I volontari finora stavano provvedendo ad una vasta gamma di attività, in molti posti completamente sostituendo servizi ed aiuto dei governi assenti. Stiamo distribuendo cibo e acqua, gestiamo le folle, forniamo le informazioni essenziali sulla registrazione e sui confini, consegnando le persone più vulnerabili all'UNHCR (Alto Commissariato delle Nazioni Unite per i Rifugiati) oppure ai servizi medici, ci prendiamo cura dei bambini, gestiamo i magazzini di vestiti e coperte, puliamo la spazzatura, raccogliamo i fondi e diamo rifugio ai più vulnerabili.
Lo stiamo facendo ormai da mesi a Lesbo, Atene, Gevgelija, Budapest, Röszke, Belgrado, Eidomeni, Hegyeshalom, Nickelsdorf, Vienna, Salisburgo, Heiligenkreuz, Zakány, Botovo, Calais, Preševo, Berkasovo, Bregana, Harmica, Trnovec, Mursko Središće, Bapska, Opatovac ed in tanti altri posti in Europa. Abbiamo fatto vedere che i volontari possono fare tanto ma non saremo più in grado di tenere migliaia di persone al caldo una volta che l'inverno colpirà.
L'inverno sta arrivando velocemente e abbiamo solo pochi giorni per rispondere in un modo umano.
Chiediamo a tutti i paesi Europei di aiutare immediatamente tutti quei paesi che devono combattere con la crisi migratoria, anziché aiutare paesi che costruiscono muri.
Chiediamo di allestire luoghi sicuri di accoglienza e di transito con servizi che possono affrontare il clima invernale delle regioni esposte.
Chiediamo anche che l'aiuto umanitario sia recapitato a tutti i bisognosi, e chiediamo inoltre servizi medici e coordinamento degli interventi a livello pan-Europeo.
Chiediamo all'UE di implementare immediatamente ulteriori meccanismi per rendere possibile un passaggio sicuro per entrare in Europa.
Questo è il messaggio a tutti voi, leader d'Europa, poiché presto ai nostri confini la gente inizierà a morire di freddo, se non agirete tempestivamente.
Finora abbiamo fatto il nostro meglio e continueremo a farlo finché sarà necessario. Ora però tocca a voi, governi d'Europa.
Rispondete per favore a questo appello e dimostrate, che l'umanità è ancora nel cuore dei valori Europei.

La telefonata arrivò alle 9 e 37 della sera del 18 marzo, sabato, vigilia della rutilante e rombante festa che la città dedicava a san Giuseppe falegname: e al falegname appunto erano offerti i roghi di mobili vecchi che quella sera si accendevano nei quartieri popolari, quasi promessa ai falegnami ancora in esercizio, e ormai pochi, di un lavoro che non sarebbe mancato. Gli uffici erano, più delle altre sere a quell'ora, quasi deserti: anche se illuminati, l'illuminazione serale e notturna degli uffici di polizia tacitamente prescritta per dare impressione ai cittadini che in quegli uffici sempre sulla loro sicurezza si vegliava.
Il telefonista annotò l'ora e il nome della persona che telefonava: Giorgio Roccella. Aveva una voce educata, calma, suadente. 'Come tutti i folli' pensò il telefonista. Chiedeva infatti, il signor Roccella, del questore: una follia, specialmente a quell'ora e in quella particolare serata.
Il telefonista si sforzò allo stesso tono, ma riuscendo a una caricaturale imitazione, resa più scoperta dalla freddura con cui rispose: «Ma il questore non è mai in questura a quest'ora», freddura che in quegli uffici abitualmente correva sulle frequenti assenze del questore. E aggiunse: «Le passo l'ufficio del commissario», col gusto di far dispetto al commissario, che certo stava in quel momento per lasciare l'ufficio.
Il commissario si stava infatti infilando il cappotto. Prese il telefono il brigadiere che aveva tavolo ad angolo con quello del commissario. Ascoltò, cercò sul tavolo una matita e un pezzo di carta; e mentre scriveva rispondeva che sì, sarebbero andati al più presto possibile ma appena possibile, così collocando la possibilità in modo da non illudere sulla prestezza.
«Chi era?» domandò il commissario.
«Un tale che, dice, ha da farci vedere urgentemente una cosa che si è trovata in casa».
«Un cadavere?» scherzò il commissario.
«No, ha detto proprio una cosa».
«Una cosa... E come si chiama, questo tale?»
Il brigadiere prese il pezzo di carta su cui aveva scritto nome e indirizzo, lesse: «Giorgio Rocella, contrada Cotugno, dal bivio per Monterosso, strada a destra, quattro chilometri; quindici da qui».
Il commissario tornò dalla porta al tavolo del brigadiere, prese quel pezzo di carta lo lesse quasi credesse di trovarvi qualcosa di più di quel che il brigadiere aveva detto.
Disse: «Non è possibile».
«Che cosa?» domandò il brigadiere.
«Questo Rocella,» disse il commissario «è un diplomatico, console o ambasciatore non so dove. Non viene qui da anni, chiusa la casa di città, abbandonata e quasi in rovina quella di campagna, in contrada Cotugno appunto... Quello che si vede dalla strada: in alto, che sembra un fortino...»
«Una vecchia masseria,» disse il brigadiere «ci sono passato sotto tante volte».
«Dentro il recinto, per cui pare una masseria, c'è un villino molto grazioso; o almeno c'era... Grande famiglia, quella dei Rocella: ma ora ridotta a questo console o ambasciatore che sia... Non credevo nemmeno fosse ancora vivo, da tanto che non si vede».
«Se vuole,» disse il brigadiere «vado a controllare».
«Ma no, sono sicuro che si tratta di uno scherzo... Domani, magari, se hai tempo e voglia, vai a dare un'occhiata... Per quanto mi riguarda, qualunque cosa accada, domani non mi cercate: vado a festeggiare il San Giuseppe da un mio amico, in campagna.
Translation - Czech Telefon zazvonil v 9 hodin a 37 minut večer, dne 18. března, v sobotu, v předvečer oslnivé a ohlušující oslavy, kterou město vzdávalo hold svatému Josefu tesaři: a tesaři byly obětovány hromady starého nábytku, které byly zapalovány uvnitř chudinských čtvrtí, skoro jako by to byl příslib těm několika málo tesařům, kteří ještě vykonávali své řemeslo, že o práci nebudou mít nouzi. Úřady byly v tu hodinu, ještě více než jiné večery, téměř pusté: a přestože byly nasvíceny, večerní a noční osvětlení policejní stanice bylo nevyřčeně určeno pouze k tomu, aby na občany dělalo dojem, že nad jejich bezpečností se v tomto městě bdí.
Spojovatel si poznamenal hodinu a jméno osoby, která volala: Giorgio Roccella. Hlas měl vychovaný, klidný a přesvědčivý. „Jako všichni cvoci“ pomyslel si spojovatel. Pan Roccella se ptal po kvestorovi: což bylo vskutku pošetilé, obzvláště v danou hodinu a v daný večer.
Spojovatel se přinutil ke stejně vyrovnanému tónu ale vyšla mu z něj jen zkarikovaná napodobenina zdůrazněná navíc nacvičenou průpovídkou: ,, Kvestor ale není nikdy přítomen v kanceláři v tuto hodinu“, hláška, kterou se odnepaměti glosovaly časté absence kvestora. A s procítěnou škodolibostí dodal: ,,přepojím vás do kanceláře komisaře“, protože komisař byl určitě v ten okamžik právě na odchodu.
A komisař si vskutku právě oblékal kabát. Telefon zvedl seržant, co měl stůl vedle komisaře. Poslouchal, našel na stole tužku a kus papíru; a zatímco psal, odpovídal, že ano, určitě tam co nejdříve zajedou, jak jen to bude možné, čímž naznačoval možnost akce, aniž by musel lhát o rychlosti provedení.
„Kdo to byl?“ zeptal se komisař.
„Kdosi, co říkal, že nám musí nutně něco ukázat, něco co našel v domě“.
„Mrtvolu“? zavtipkoval komisař.
„Ne, řekl doslova něco“.
„Něco... A jak se ten kdosi jmenuje?“
Seržant vzal kus papíru, na který si poznamenal jméno a adresu a četl: ,,Giorgio Rocella, ulice Cotugno, od rozcestí směr Monterosso doprava čtyři kilometry; patnáct odsud.“
Komisař se vrátil od dveří ke stolu seržanta, vzal do ruky papír a začetl se do něj, skoro jako by věřil, že najde něco víc, než mu seržant přečetl.
,,To není možné“ řekl.
,,Co není možné?“ zeptal se seržant.
,,Tenhle Rocella,“ odpověděl komisař, „je diplomat, konsul nebo ambasador nevím kde. Nejezdí sem už nevím kolik let, dům ve městě je zavřený a ten na venkově, to jest ten v ulici Cotugno, se rozpadá na kusy... Ten co je vidět ze silnice: na kopci, že vypadá jako pevnost.
„Ten starý statek,“ řekl seržant „jel jsem kolem něj kolikrát“
„Za tím plotem kvůli kterému to vypadá jako statek, je takový moc pěkný domeček; nebo spíš byl...
Slavná rodina, tihle Rocellové: ale dneska se scvrkli jen na tohodle konsula nebo ambasadora, ať už je co chce...
Nevěřil jsem už ani, že ještě žije, jak dlouho se tu neukázal.
„Pokud chcete,“ řekl seržant „zajedu se tam podívat“.
„Ale ne, určitě je to jen nějaký vtip...Zítra třeba, jestli budeš mít čas a chuť, můžeš se tam zajet mrknout... Co se mě týče, ať se stane cokoliv, zítra mě nehledejte: jedu oslavit Svatého Josefa k jednomu známému na venkov.

Source text - English It is February the fourteenth, at that hour of the morning when all the children have been taken to school and all the husbands have driven themselves to work or been dropped, steambreathing and greatcoated at the rail station at the edge of the town for the Great Comute, when I pin my heart to Missi's front door.
The heart is deep dark red that is almost a brown, the color of liver. Then I knock on the door, sharply, rata-tat-tat!, and I grasp my wand, my stick, my oh-so-thurstable and beribboned lance and I vanish like cooling steam into the chilly air.
Missy opens the door. Shee looks tired.
“My Columbine,” I breathe, but she hears not a word. She turns her head, so she takes in the view from one side of the street to the other, but nothing moves. A truck rumbles in the distance. She walks back into the kitchen, and I dance, silent as a breeze, as a mouse, as a dream, into the kitchen beside her.
Missy takes a plastic sandwich bag from a paper box in the kitchen drawer, and a bottle of cleaning spray from under the sink. She pulls off two sections of paper towel from the roll on the kitchen counter. Then she walks back to the front door. She pulls the pin from the painted wood-it was my hatpin, which I had stumbled across....where? I turn the matter over in my head: in Gascony, perhaps? or Twickenham? or Prague?
The face on the end of the hatpin is that of a pale Pierrot.

Translation - Czech Byl únor čtrnáctého, ta raní hodina, kdy už byly všechny děti odvedeny do školy a všichni manželé odjeli do práce, nebo byli vysazeni, nabalení a s obláčky u úst na železniční stanici na okraji města k Velkému Dojíždění, když jsem přišpendlil mé srdce na slečniny dveře. Srdce je tmavočervené barvy, která se skoro zdá být hnědá barva jater. Pak zaklepu na dveře, ostře, rata-tat-tat! a uchopím mou hůlku, můj proutek, mou taktovku, mé vždy spolehlivé, opentlené kopí a mizím jako chladnoucí pára v ledovém vzduchu.
Slečna otevírá dveře. Vypadá unaveně.
„Má Kolumbíno,“ vydechnu ale ona neslyší ani slovo. Otočí hlavou, tak aby viděla z jednoho konce ulice na druhý ale nikde se nic ani nepohne. V dálce zarachotí projíždějící náklaďák. Vrátí se zpátky do kuchyně a já vtančím, tichý jako vánek, jako myška, jako sen, do kuchyně za ní.
Slečna vezme igelitový svačinový sáček z papírové krabice v kuchyňském šuplíku a lahev s čistícím prostředkem z pod dřezu. Utrhne dva díly papírových ubrousků z role na kuchyňské lince. A pak se vrátí k předním dveřím. Vytáhne špendlík z malovaného dřeva – byl to můj špendlík, na který jsem narazil...kde? Snažím se tomu přijít na kloub: v Gascony, možná? nebo v Twickenhamu? nebo v Praze? Na hlavičce špendlíku je tvář bledého Pierrota.

I studied electronics at high school and I graduated in nuclear physics, so I have a very strong technical background. Furthermore I continued my studies at faculty of Social sciences (sociology) but unfortunately I had to quit due to high university fees. Recently I enrolled to Tourism Sciences at Tor Vergata University in Rome. I laterally never stop learning which is a big advantage if you have to translate texts from different fields.
I spent last three years working as manager in a youth hostel in Sicily which allowed me to gain fluency in English. I also became very comfortable with the international environment and used to culturally conditioned points of view.
I also translated/corrected subtitles for fansub groups (Jurinoki, Kakashiho prekladatelsky servis) in 2004. Major projects were TV series Hanbane Renmei, Juni Koki and Noir (eng-»cze).
Since I was a girl, I've been reading from 3 to 6 books a month and one day, I would love to became book translator.
