Portuguese to English: THE USE OF AUTHENTIC NARRATIVES AS MOTIVATION IN THE SPANISH CLASSES General field: Social Sciences Detailed field: Education / Pedagogy
Source text - Portuguese O USO DE TEXTOS AUTÊNTICOS COMO MOTIVAÇÃO NA AULA DE ESPANHOL

The main goal of this study was to observe the knowledge level of the students about the Latin American culture on the classes of Spanish as EIL. In this sense, the use of authentic narratives can endorse the language teaching from an intercultural perspective of education (WALSH, 2009), in which is allowed the dialogue between diversified cultures and the questioning of the unequal relations existent among them, constructing an equitable model of society. The authentic narrative is the one which was not produced with the aim of being used on the language teaching process (TOMLINSON, 2011), such as songs, poems, photographs, among others. Those texts can be used on the classroom contributing to the communicative use of the languaculture of a determined community, considering the speakers use of it on their social relations. This research adopts a qualitative approach, applied to a case study of ethnographic and interventionists mark on a federal public school of Goiânia, having as target audience the students of the EIL course of the second year of the High School. On the observations made on the school studied during the course of Supervised Internship 3 and 4, we verify most of the observed group is African descendant, with age between 16 and 17 years. We consider the occurrences of classes on the last slot of the morning session a relevant fact on the demoralization of the students during the EIL classes. The activities were elaborated with the aim of bringing cultural aspects of the Latin-American people which have Spanish as official language to the classroom. We select narratives that talk about the afro-Latin culture, on the attempt of arouse the feeling of otherness on the students, and along with, enable a learning process of teaching and learning the languages in a meaningful way. During the three interventions, we worked with the following texts: The song El bandido Salto de Mata, of the group La Vela Puerca, photos of the Latin-American people, slides showing the linguistic and cultural similarities between the Palenqueros, on Colombia, and the Kalunga, in Goiás, the poem Rotundamente Negra of Shyrley Campbell, the song Libertad of Julieta Venegas, slides showing the socio-cultural similarities among the freedom and resistance movements of the Brazilian and Panamá enslaved people. On the analyses of this data, we realize how the Latin-American culture is few discussed on the classroom and how this can be an injury to the comprehension of the students about their Brazilian and Latin-American identity.

Entendam então, as minhas dores do espírito.
Translation - English Fabiano's Column/// I know you have fear of going mad in Rio Grande, but this would happen in any corner of the world. I say you will control all this with faith and many pills, and those eyes of yours will shine for some more decades. My dear, it is just another night of lightnings crossing the night sky and a friend of mine tell me he will stay drinking until the morning lights. Can't you see that we should be used and less haunted? Can't you see that we are incapable of noticing that this is the life like everyone’s else? Don't wait more than this. Our generation was damaged: they gave us hopes and created expectations on us; and now we are a problem for the society and an unfailing source for the big pharmaceutical trusts. They will sell more and more pills to control your madness, that was created by a bunch of artificial expectations of the big trusts of selling dreams. Because of this, and because of the claustrophobia, I'm afraid of going mad in Rio Grande. With or without you.
One day, was a sunny August morning in a Japanese city. The Enola Gay killed a hundred thousand people and turn up useless even the carbon of the sole. Then, the same people which created the bombs that destroyed Japan, passed to produce, in a frenetic rhythm, biological, chemical, nuclear armory. On 1988, the quantity of bombs produced by the US, had already reached the hallucinogenic rhythm of 48 consecutive turns the capacity of extinguish the life on the planet. After there, they kept producing, reproducing and selling guns and more guns until they became useless, because there wouldn't be anyone else to handle them. I catch myself thinking that you should control your madness, your insanity, on medical advice, to not turn into a poison to the collectively. I try to understand this problematic of fearing the madness, while the frenetic rhythm of the bombs' production to kill people increases. We should dope the killers who invent guns to kill, maim, mangle kids, but no one understands that. You need a pill because the world does not understand that. The logic was inverted: We dope the inoffensive people so they can live under the horror of those who cause the destruction.
For this sky gray of manure, phosphate and carcinogenic agents; for this political delay and for the provincial point of view: I prefer Rio Grande. I prefer, resigned, simply enjoy this madness that ravage us, instead of wither on the normality of the cruelty and corruption. I still have scruples and limits. I don't care anymore about suffering of a disorder that makes me ignore the present and live tied to the past. For some people, it is a terrible disease, but for me, it is a therapy that fulfills my blood of dopamine and ease the pain of the reality. Some people prefer Diclofenac. I prefer past. I don't criticize those who take powerful painkillers, because I understand their need to overcome the body pain. Understand them, the pain of my spirit.
I know that is a crass mistake of mine, and that you will charge me for that, with the eyes considerably opened and the dilated pupils; I know that between a beer and other, after that coffee that gets cold and lays down on your desk, you will charge me for that, I know, I know well, that the forthcoming years and the weight of the hours, will give you some reason, and I believe in the humanity on a unique way. It can not be right now, after more than 20 years of incessant fight, that I will discredit the humanity. As long as there is one of us, humans, looking to this huge dome and contemplating this big world and what we could and still can make of it, I will think there's still a chance. I'm sorry for telling you this and i know it is late, but I will come back there and believe that we still can do something. The rest of the way, this way of deep loneliness and disbelief, I won't do with you.
I talk to you and the hours pass; I see you fall apart and be afraid of the madness, but what is the madness otherwise the fear itself? The madness is a state of self-doubt, under the vigilance and it is usually associated to a pattern of mismatch with the rest of the society. Because of that, I went mad. I went mad when in a class of History, until on the first grade, I questioned the reasons of throw an atomic bomb on test stage under defenseless civilians. I went mad when I discussed with my best friends of school because they had hit an homosexual. I went mad when living in a village without sanitation and lights, with most of the population subliterate. And 20 years ago, i decided to be punk. This madness that makes life and breathing the air in the morning worth living, fulfilling the lungs of dew. I didn't have a chance of being humble because my childhood passed to fast, and soon i was already a teenager, and when I wake up, one day, suddenly, without being consulted, I was already an adult. I will tell you no more about the madness. I think Foucault told that history much better than me.
IN 1793, the brief piece between the french people and the KIng Luis XVI was disrupted. After the bourgeois revolution of 1789, a conciliation was not a hope. The ones like us were coming: Jacobins. Those which the History did not give a lot of time. JAcques Louis David, that transited among those and the Erundina morality, painted the republican scenarios with the passion of the Roman Republic, and his eyes was shining. The people taken over the streets and started to attack the privilege of the rich, that hired between the King opposition, have changed sides. And someone was saying that was a dream, that take a stand was a dream; In 1860, the Czar Alexandre II, of Russia, to supply the early industrialization of that Empire, established a law that officially ended the feudalism, giving autonomy for those that did not wanted the bond with the land: millions had addressed to the cities, believing they were free of the exploration on the fields while they were driven to the misery of the urban centers. I write this, because even on the despair states or in the political confusion, there always is some hope. Above the political interests, there is a huge majority that believes in life, and unaware of the political conventional games, believe that the good overcomes evil always. Someone is always mad enough to deem even on the rich.
Now, it is a sunny morning. Another amazing day started. Your eyes are radiant and this color overfill the room. I advise you to finally thank to the Man (sic) modern (that is always manly, white, with fixed income and young) through this amazing world that you can find now that you left the trance that this old medicine was causing on you. You will see more and more guns for the safety of the Western, and more torture instruments, to get more crucial information of those who are against the life and the freedom of the Western citizens. You will find the WIndows 8, the MP12 and a bunch more of wasteful created to be crucial to your survival. There are new drugs on the market, new pills to give you peace and quietness, while the Western eliminated their enemies. Look to the sky, smile, and believe that this fear of going mad in Rio Grande is amazing, and makes part of the architecture of this city, and of the huge dome of the world. \
