Adult neurogenesis is the process of generating new neurons in the adult brain. Defects in this process have been observed in various animal models of neurological disorders such as Down syndrome.
DSCR1 is known for its involvement in learning and memory and is overexpressed in Down syndrome. TET1, which is an enzyme, and miRNA-124, which is a micro-RNA, are known for having roles in adult neurogenesis, but the details were not clear. Scientists have now found how the three molecules work together to regulate adult neurogenesis. They showed that DSCR1 binds to a non-coding section of TET1 RNA, subsequently controlling expression of TET1 proteins, which then regulate miRNA-124 expression levels. This process is required for adult neurogenesis and for maintaining learning and memory abilities.
Knocking out DSCR1 in mice led to increased TET1 levels, and ultimately increased miRNA-124 expression. Correcting TET1 levels in these mice prevented defective adult neurogenesis. Also, adult neurogenesis, and learning and memory impairments improved in a mouse model of Down syndrome when the scientists restored DSCR1 levels.
The findings reveal that precise regulation of DSCR1 and the interplay between TET1 and miRNA-124 are crucial for normal adult neurogenesis. Scientists says that the findings not only provide a basic understanding of the mechanisms regulating adult neurogenesis, but will also contribute to the development of a novel therapy for the cognitive deficits manifested in Down syndrome patients.

يتمثل تطوير النَّسيجِ العَصَبِيّ البالغ في عملية توليد خلايا عصبية جديدة في الدماغ، وقد لوحظ قصور في هذه العملية لدى نماذج حيوانية مختلفة تعاني من اضطرابات النمو العصبي كما في متلازمة داون.
تُعرف مورّثة DSCR1 بمساهمتها في التعلم والذاكرة ويعبَر عنها بشكل مفرط في متلازمة داون، ومن المعروف أن للإنزيم TET1 وللحمض النووي الريبي الصِغري miRNA-124 دور في تخليق النَّسيجِ العَصَبِيّ البالغ، ولكن تفاصيل هذا الدور لم تكن واضحة. أما الآن فقد اكتشف العلماء كيفية عمل الجزيئات الثلاثة معًا لتنظيم تصنيع النَّسيجِ العَصَبِيّ البالغ. ولقد أوضح العلماء أن مورّثة DSCR1 ترتبط بقسم غير مشفر منTET1 RNA ، الأمر الذي يتحكم لاحقًا في تصنيع بروتينات TET1 وينظم بعد ذلك مستويات التعبير الجيني لـmiRNA-124، هذه العملية مطلوبة لتصنيع النَّسيجِ العَصَبِيّ البالغ وللحفاظ على قدرات التعلم والذاكرة.

Bio
I am Syrian and my native language is Arabic. I studied pharmacy and business administration. I discovered my passion in Translation in 2012 when i started a volunteer job with community groups in in Doha. Doha is a city with many expats who speak different languages. So there was a demand for translation. When i stepped in as a volunteer translator i discovered my passion.
I started earning money from translating medical documents in 2013 when i started working for Art of Abundant Living with the health coach Nicole Van Hattem. She is Australian but she had plenty of Arabic clients and she hired me to translate her papers to be introduced to the Arabic clients. I also translated the Facebook page of Art of Abundant Living.
Now i am working on a medical translation project which is given as training material for healthcare professionals in Qatar.
