Source text - English I remember reading once that some fellows use language to conceal thought, but it's been my experience that a good many more use it instead of thought.
A businessman's conversation should be regulated by fewer and simpler rules than any other function of the human animal. They are:
Have something to say.
Say it.
Stop talking.
Beginning before you know what you want to say and keeping on after you have said it lands a merchant in a lawsuit or the poorhouse, and the first is a short cut to the second. I maintain a legal department here, and it costs a lot of money, but it's to keep me from going to law.
It's all right when you are calling on a girl or talking with friends after dinner to run a conversation like a Sunday-school excursion, with stops to pick flowers; but in the office your sentences should be the shortest distance possible between periods. Cut out the introduction and the peroration, and stop before you get to secondly. You've got to preach short sermons to catch sinners; and deacons won't believe they need long ones themselves. Give fools the first and women the last word. The meat's always in the middle of the sandwich. Of course, a light butter on either side of it doesn't do any harm if it's intended for a man who likes butter.
Remember, too, that it's easier to look wise than to talk wisdom. Say less than the other fellow and listen more than you talk; for when a man's listening he isn't telling on himself and he's flattering the fellow who is. Give most men a good listener and most women enough note-paper and they'll tell all they know. Money talks -- but not unless its owner has a loose tongue, and then its remarks are always offensive. Poverty talks, too, but nobody wants to hear what it has to say.
Translation - German Ich erinnere mich, einmal gelesen zu haben, dass manche Zeitgenossen Sprache dazu verwenden, ihre Gedanken zu verbergen. Meiner Erfahrung nach wird sie jedoch von einer weitaus größeren Zahl anstelle der Gedanken verwendet.
Die Konversation eines Geschäftsmanns sollte weniger und einfacheren Regeln folgen als alle anderen Funktionen der menschlichen Kreatur. Sie lauten:
Man sollte etwas zu sagen haben,
es sagen,
und dann aufhören zu reden.
Wenn ein Kaufmann zu reden beginnt, bevor er weiß, was er sagen möchte, und weiterspricht, nachdem er es gesagt hat, bringt ihn das vor Gericht oder ins Armenhaus, wobei Ersteres eine Abkürzung zu Letzterem ist. Ich unterhalte hier eine Rechtsabteilung, die mich viel Geld kostet, aber die auch dafür sorgt, dass ich nicht vor Gericht muss.
Wenn du eine junge Dame besuchst oder dich nach dem Essen mit Freunden unterhältst, darf die Unterhaltung ruhig einem Ausflug der Sonntagsschule gleichen, bei dem man unterwegs anhält, um Blumen zu pflücken; im Büro aber sollten deine Sätze die kürzeste mögliche Verbindung zwischen zwei Punkten sein. Lass Einleitung und Schlusswort weg, und ende, bevor du zu „zweitens“ kommst. Mit kurzen Predigten fängt man Sünder, und der Pfarrer wird staunen, dass er selbst so lange Reden dazu braucht. Man sollte Dummköpfen das erste und Frauen das letzte Wort lassen. Das Fleisch ist immer in der Mitte des Sandwichs. Ein wenig Butter auf beiden Seiten schadet selbstverständlich nicht, wenn es für jemanden bestimmt ist, der Butter schätzt.
Vergiss auch nicht, dass es leichter ist, weise zu wirken, als weise zu sprechen. Sag weniger als der andere, und hör mehr zu, als du selbst sprichst; denn wer zuhört, verrät nichts über sich und schmeichelt demjenigen, der es tut. Hört man Männern gut zu und gibt Frauen genügend Schreibpapier, sagen sie dir in den meisten Fällen alles, was sie wissen. „Money talks“, heißt es, Geld kann sprechen, Geld regiert die Welt. Aber es spricht nur, wenn der Besitzer seine Zunge nicht in Zaum hält, und zudem sind seine Äußerungen immer kränkend. Auch die Armut kann sprechen; doch was sie zu sagen hat, möchte niemand hören.

I'm a freelance translator with a degree in translation studies from the Department of Applied Linguistics and Cultural Studies of Johannes-Gutenberg-Universität Mainz (FASK Germersheim), specialising in the translation of journalistic and scientific texts. My specialities are politics (EU, international relations and agreements, environmental policies, etc.) and the environment/conservation.
I have been working as a freelance translator for over 20 years, and have lots of experience translating texts that need to read well, e.g. press releases or newspaper articles.
I work for a range of clients, such as translation agencies, publishing houses and other direct clients, including international organisations, government institutions and universities. I've also been working as a coach for translators for over 10 years, offering workshops, talks and one-on-one coaching. I'm based in the U.K.
