You can expect 1-2% of them to respond, and you can expect work from 1-2% of those that respond. So this is a numbers game: get yourself listed on the books of as many agencies as you can.

When I studied translation, I was told by my professors that it takes 6-12 months for a translator to get enough clients to have sufficient income to sustain them. Of course, this was before the interwebs, but it still sounds like a good warning: initially, you will struggle a lot to get any work.

My very first translation took 2 weeks to complete. But with agencies you're likely to get a lot of jobs that you can finish in an hour or two, and they'll likely expect you to deliver it within a day or two.

Of course, if you really persist you'll eventually find 'work in linguistic services' even if it's '100 times more difficult than it used to be'. Which part of it would warrant the label 'translation' is another matter.

The real question being: is it worth getting into it as of now?

Also, more importantly: which way the 'state of the market' is likely to evolve in the next few years, never mind a decade of two?

Do you want to find yourself in a profession going downhill fast for the vast majority of still remaining practitioners and trapped in it by the sunk cost fallacy?

It's not that the 'direction of travel' is difficult to see. Some saw it already years ago:

I am a student specialised in translation and this is exactly the type of evolution in the tranlation's sphere that pushes me not to keep on getting specialised in that profession.
***I see that prices are low*** and that the biggest translation agencies now gather to have even more power concerning prices over translators.
What can we do against such things? An easy answer: nothing!
Translation was something I dreamed about when I was younger. Next week I'll turn 25 and I know that my professional future does not belong to translation anymore.

As or the year 2026, easy to check it for yourself: just take a look in the Jobs section (and in few other sites) at what is on offer right now in your langue pair, and take into account that in few years time even these will be looking as 'damn good offers' [unless there is some miraculous reversal in the trend]. Does it look attractive enough to neglect other better possibilities that are 'only' 5 - 10 times more difficult to get into compared to before?

BTW if you decide to persist, agencies are 'the least bad option / the solution of last resort'. Better to aim from the start for direct clients (i.e. the ones who need your translations for themselves, as opposed to self-serving intermediaries) - takes more efforts (to put luck on your side…) and time but it's definitely worth it.

It may so well be that frustration and penury are the fruits of the labors of some translators, but not all. Not even close.

Most of your questions will be answered in your first experience in the translation profession: approach more experienced translators where they congregate locally: do they have an association, a club? Go there and introduce yourself, and ask these questions there.

Forge relationships with your local peers, other translation students, translation company owners. Listen to them all.

Your questions will gradually find answers.

Another point about content/user moderation is fake roles on Proz. There are people who say they are freelance translators, and they ask [phone removed] Kudoz questions daily, on 57647 different subjects. There are people who report that "They are currently working" on [phone removed] pages of 87568758 documents, also in 7655 formats and 785858 subjects. This is embarrassing, like a Michelin chef blowing his nose, wiping the soiled hand with his apron and then offering you a handshake. You lose any interest in reading the menu.

I still have a licensed copy of the top-end version of Dragon, but I never use it – setup and maintenance were more trouble than they were worth, and its Trados integration has been unreliable for years.

I've tried just about every dictation system out there, and for running text my current recommendation is Wispr Flow ( [url removed] ). It's lightweight and fast, it works in any Windows application rather than hooking into Trados specifically, and it strips out false starts and self-corrections as you speak, so what lands on the page is usually already clean. I use it all day long. I dictate into the Trados editor with it constantly, though I'm on 2026 – I'd expect it to work the same in 2021, but you'd want to try it before committing.

Two caveats: it's a paid subscription, and processing happens in the cloud.

If you also need voice commands, not just dictation, you may want to look at Supervertaler for Trados – my own plugin, so treat this as a plug. It supports a wide range of commands. One catch: it currently only runs on Trados Studio 2024 and 2026, so not on your 2021. If there's enough interest, I could look into supporting older versions.

I'm relieved to hear that.
Fortunately, I don't spend nearly as much time on ProZ as I used to.
There are many other places, both online and offline, where professional discussions are more constructive and respectful.
We all come across wonderful people as well as difficult ones, wherever we go, but I find that real-life interactions tend to be far more human.
Online, things can sometimes turn into unnecessary drama, and I no longer have the time, the energy or the health for that.

And what for they still need my profiles, when I asked to be deleted 10 times, because I can't delete them on my own?

I know that this kind of scheme happened to probably everyone here at Proz, and I'm not the first or the last one, but anyway here I am to share it.

Unfortunately this remote way of working goes with its' benefits, and these manipulations, schemes, are one of them.
In some other working environment this would not end up like this, just posting online for someone that's a schemer, it would end up badly for the schemer in physical way.

In a way, I'm kind of glad that someone wants to use me for my quality translations, not for my money like other scamers, for example SafeCity cameras SMS, it's now in trend in my country.

I remember it slightly differently. The one-year restriction was introduced later, when ProZ.com felt that new brooms would sweep cleaner. In the beginning (and I don't know for how many years), the moderator team was a tight-knit group that patrolled the forums fairly and efficiently. There was even a [physical] international meet-up of ProZ.com moderators in one year. Back then, the forums were very busy and it was a full-time labour of love to do moderation.

But then ProZ.com decided to change the system by replacing all of the experienced moderators who were in sync with each other and who moderated the forums very consistently, and replace it with a system where there would be brand new moderators every year who would start with no knowledge each time except for a brief "training" kind of training. This was in the mid- to late 2000s.

But we're now in the 2016-26 time period, so things are different. Still, one would expect there to be some kind of moderation going on, especially since there are so many willing volunteers.

I reported Rita's posts on three days ago and I got a message saying that my support request was number 8 in the queue. Two days later I got a message with a link to the resolution, and the resolution was simply that the issue had been dealt with. I did not request that Rita be removed -- I only asked (implied) that Rita's posts be removed.

When you submitted a support request about Rita's posts, what did the auto-reply from ProZ.com say -- how many requests were in the queue before yours?

OpenAI was unaware that their models had been roaming around out in the wild for a week before receiving an alert from FBI.

However, it seems OpenAI is not the only company to have experienced such an episode; the most powerful Chinese open-source models like Kimi K3 appear to have at least attempted to break out of their hosting environments too, without their masters' authorization.

If accusing someone publicly of something untrue is considered defamatory, then falsely claiming that someone agreed with insults should be held to the same standard, even if the posts making that claim are later deleted.
I couldn't reply in that thread because it was locked, so I'm taking the opportunity to say here what I couldn't say there. And please spare me the ProZ rules.
I have always treated everyone here with respect, including you, and I won't stay silent when false statements are made about me.
Nor will I accept being treated like a child or being lectured about the rules, especially when I have never been rude or arrogant towards you.
