I’ve used it for a friend who is an interpreter when I see job offers that might interest her (she is a Proz member though not active) and the same for another friend who is a translator specialized in computers (not a Proz member). Much more often I’ve emailed friends drawing their attention to a particular job.
No. Never. Mainly because most of my friends are in other professions. Something to consider though.

I have on occasion "told a friend" by emailing them the link to a job posting. But not used the button. Can't teach an old dog new tricks, I suppose.

Yes, I always use it when I cannot submit an offer myself because of specialization, or availability, or whatever. Sometimes when the volume is twice bigger than I can handle and I need to share it with a friend to discuss if he is available to cooperate if the client will choose one of us. | | | Kay Denney France Local time: 22:49 French to English
At the risk of sounding unfriendly.... Lately I've had several friends hinting or saying outright that they wouldn't mind doing a bit of translation on the side. I've told them about building up my business and I suppose it must seem pretty easy since I had loads of contacts and started getting plenty of work straight away. However, none of them have done anything about setting up their own business, it seems that they simply think I'll pass on work I can't handle myself. And they're only available at the weekend, or in the winter, or when school is out or in or whatever. One friend was with me when I got a message from a PM asking if I could lower my rate "just this once". I wrote back insisting on my usual rate, take it or leave it, while my friend was saying "no, I'll do it for them!". To which I replied that undercutting me was perhaps not the best way to get a foot in the door to translation. (I ended up getting the job at my usual rate btw). So no, I'm not telling my friends about jobs here. They can do some legwork themselves first. ▲ Collapse | | | neilmac Spain Local time: 22:49 Spanish to English + ...
I wasn't aware that there was a button for this purpose. However, if I see any jobs advertised that might be interesting to any of my colleagues, I usually mention it to them, if they are available at the time. | | | Mario Freitas Brazil Local time: 17:49 Member (2014) English to Portuguese + ... No, and I never will | Apr 13, 2019 |
I have learned how to identify commercial stuff with marketing intent instead of the purpose it mentions a long time ago. I no longer fall for these things. | | | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Poll: Have you ever used the "Tell a friend" button in a job offer?
