In general, I prefer long translation jobs as they keep me busy for longer.

Me too; I recently completed a translation that lasted for3 months! That's the kind of work I like.

A long project with a deadline that allows for several short jobs; I’ve been booked this morning for a series of 5 jobs but for the moment I don’t know how long they will be…

Hate big jobs. Anything over a week and I get bored.

Something long... but varied, please so I don't get bored. And with a nice comfy deadline so I can fit smaller ones in between chapters!
Oh and did I mention that it'd be nice to be paid at my top rate?
Thank you Father Christmas!!

How long is a piece of string? May 22, 2020

Not sure what other translators consider small, medium and long. Anyway, I prefer around 1,000 - 3,000 words.

Literary translations are usually long with the exception of song lyrics and poetry.

With fast payment May 22, 2020

I don't have preference regarding length, but I hope my next translation job has quick payment. In this unprecedented crisis, the worst in History, we can't wait long periods for payment, but some people don't understand this. The rent won't wait (without a fine), taxes (we have 120 taxes in Brazil) won't wait, etc.

Length not a good metric May 22, 2020

I hope that my next translation is interesting and allows me to grow professionally. Its length is neither here nor there.

Funny! May 22, 2020

Among all excuses not to work I've seen in the polls so far, now we should have some kind of preference for the size of the jobs? How about the format of the files, the color of the fonts, the name of the PMs...?

Short May 22, 2020

I already had work lined up to do this weekend and next week, and this morning one client sent me two papers to revise/proof for their journal. Fair enough, because there is no set deadline for these. Then, I got an email from another client informing me that they will be sending me something to translate between today if they can manage it, tomorrow and Monday. That's all fine and well, but I hope it isn't too long, because my friend/colleague is coming out to visit tomorrow for the rest of the weekend, as the lockdown in the city has been getting her down and I'd like to spend more time with her instead of working all weekend.

UPDATE: Yay! It turned out the job was only just over 1500 words and pretty straightforward content; I'm already halfway through it and they'll be sending the rest on Monday
