1. What Micardis is and what it is used for
Micardis belongs to a class of medicines known as angiotensin II receptor antagonists. Angiotensin II is a substance produced in your body which causes your blood vessels to narrow, thus increasing your blood pressure. Micardis blocks the effect of angiotensin II so that the blood vessels relax, and your blood pressure is lowered.
Micardis is used to treat essential hypertension (high blood pressure) in adults. ‘Essential’ means that the high blood pressure is not caused by any other condition.
High blood pressure, if not treated, can damage blood vessels in several organs, which could lead sometimes to heart attack, heart or kidney failure, stroke, or blindness. There are usually no symptoms of high blood pressure before damage occurs. Thus it is important to regularly measure blood pressure to verify if it is within the normal range.

1. Qué es Micardis y para qué se utiliza
Micardis pertenece a una clase de medicamentos conocidos como antagonistas de los receptores de la angiotensina II. La angiotensina II es una sustancia producida por el organismo que provoca el estrechamiento de los vasos sanguíneos, aumentando así la presión arterial. Micardis bloquea el efecto de la angiotensina II, de manera que los vasos sanguíneos se relajan y la presión arterial se reduce.
Micardis se usa para tratar la hipertensión esencial (presión arterial elevada) en adultos. «Esencial» significa que la presión arterial elevada no se debe a ninguna otra causa.
La presión arterial elevada, si no se trata, puede dañar los vasos sanguíneos en diversos órganos, lo que puede conducir, en algunos casos, a infartos de miocardio, insuficiencia cardíaca o renal, infartos cerebrales o ceguera. Generalmente no se presentan síntomas de presión arterial elevada antes de que se produzcan las lesiones. Así pues, es importante medir regularmente la presión arterial para verificar si esta se encuentra dentro del intervalo normal.
