I had a slight increase comparing to the Covid years, however I’m not yet at the same level I was before. I’ve also noticed that the vicious cycle of ups and downs has stood out more persistently: after a great month comes a poor one. Let’s hope 2023 is a better year for everyone!

I could have voted two ways: I have had fewer assignments this year, and also I have had a heavier workload.
Both due to the same fact, that a good client is giving me more work, but mostly in the form of large projects. Luckily they are cool so I can give long deadlines and still accept other work, but I have had to turn down some work from lesser-paying agencies.

More work Dec 22, 2022

Lots of marketing texts this year - mostly from companies looking for investors. And almost no new video games to translate.

Slightly increased compared to 2021 Dec 22, 2022

Since 2018 my workload continues to increase year after year. In 2022 I will break my turnover record for the 4th year in a row. There's still some margin to do even better in 2023, but it becomes obviously increasingly smaller and apart from that no one knows what the impact of the several global crises will be in 2023. I've always managed to cope with periods of crisis in the past, but I'm afraid today's situation is worse than it has ever been in the last few decades. So I brace myself for what might be a year that will be more difficult than I'm used to. We'll see.

I don't keep a record of how many assignments I get. It's irrelevant, because the word counts vary from a few dozens of words to more than 70.000, so less assignments in a year can still mean more turnover and vice versa.

Fewer but better Dec 22, 2022

I'm doing fewer jobs, but better ones. Turning down lots of jobs that, frankly, look as if they would just bore me to death, take up a lot of my time and effort, and wouldn't pay me anything like my standard rate. I'd rather wait for the interesting jobs to come along (as they do) and enjoy spending time on them, getting them just right - and getting paid properly for a professional job, done well.

Literally? Dec 23, 2022

I sometimes wonder whether the people who insist on a literal interpretation of these poll questions also translate literally. Isn’t it part of our job to see the intended meaning behind clumsy formulations?

My workload has been about the same.

Cannot calculate Dec 23, 2022

I still cannot calculate but what I do know is that I seem to have lost an agency which used to provide work daily because I objected to €0.01 per source word with fuzzy matches if you please for proofreading (new rate) but gained another one now where there are no fuzzy matches, etc. I used to like the work sent by the first agency though as it was varied, sometimes competitions and their rules and what they were about, lots of videos, Facebook Twitter and LinkedIn posts, surveys etc.
