What can DC as a rank of police officer stand for? There appears such a character as DC Hamish McPhee; the scene is laid in England, though (just in case it is relevant) the author uses American English.

this is the rank of a police constable working in the detective divsion of the police, as oppposed to a regular pc = police constable
