Brandüberschlag

German to English Tech/Engineering Safety
This is a follow-up report following a fire.

Discussion

Kim Metzger Feb 19, 2021:
dienten would normally suggest a postive thing, IMO, but apparently not here.
Lancashireman Feb 19, 2021:
The ceiling boards/tiles/panels were the first thing they ripped out in clearing up after the fire. They had made the fire worse than it need have been.
philgoddard Feb 19, 2021:
Kim But if so, how do you explain Brent's first reference, which implies that they're a good thing?
Kim Metzger Feb 19, 2021:
Phil My 'prevention of fire spread' is a misreading. The tiles encouraged the spread.
philgoddard Feb 19, 2021:
I'm confused Kim's first reference implies that they encouraged the fire to spread. Brent's suggests that they were deliberately designed to prevent it.

fire spread

RESISTANCE TO INCIPIENT SPREAD OF FIRE (RISF)
Floor/ceiling systems or roof systems with an FRL include the roof lining or flooring as part of the fire barrier.  Ceilings with a Resistance to the Incipient Spread of Fire state the ability of a ceiling to limit the temperature rise in the ceiling cavity [shown below]. Ceilings with 60 minutes of RISF are specified by the BCA and are appropriate where the ceiling is the primary fire barrier that limits fire spread by way of the ceiling void. https://blog.knauf.solutions/how-to-select-a-fire-rated-wall...

In your case, it should be "prevention of fire spread"

fire resistant boards

I think in this particular case, Brandüberschlag refers to some sort of fire protection building component.

ausstopfen.

The closest thing I could find was fire boards or fire resistant boards.

fire deterrent

Laverty repeatedly sold panels of regular glass to customers which he falsely marketed as specially designed panels with fire deterrent capabilities.

Logically, a roof partially covered with tempered glass solar panels is far less likely to ignite in the first place. However, this fire deterrent capacity is in no way considered by UL.

Flame-retardant curtains can be a beautiful room divided, which can double as a passive fire deterrent.

German term (edited): die als Brandüberschlag dienten

which funnelled the fire

I recommend a rephrasing here:
which served to funnel the flames > which had the effect of funnelling the flames > which funnelled the flames

which funnelled the flames along the ceiling to the admin building

As a translation for the single term 'Brandüberschlag, you might like to consider
fire accelerant
The cladding on the student accommodation block was not the aluminium composite material (ACM) used on Grenfell Tower, which had acted as a fire accelerant.
https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2019/11/18/fire-n18.html

Tiles that were used acted as a fire accelerant and a fire at the bakery spread rapidly, substantially destroying the building.
