Pride Is Sometimes A Good Thing For example, taking pride in one's work, or taking pride in one's appearance, both of which exude an aura of professionalism, and are, IMO, a form of respect and even caring for (the needs of) others. In those cases, pride doesn't seem to have all that much, if anything, to do with arrogant egotism.
neilmac Jul 27, 2022:
My take "Pride comes before a fall" is a set phrase, and it's the first thing that sprang to mind upon seeing the query. Some people call this kind of thing a cliché, which makes me want to give them a slap. I prefer to call them “sayings”, defined as “short, pithy, commonly known expressions that generally offer advice or wisdom.”
Barbara Cochran, MFA Jul 27, 2022:
General Text The asker mentioned it is a general text. Because of that, I shied away from its English translation in a business context. And I'm not interested in the color of anyone's skin, or for setting up any kind of "opposition", one against the other. I'm only interested in hearing reason and truth come out of anyone's mouth. I hope that less and less people will stop buying into that kind of divisiveness. It doesn't lead to peace, or to any kind brotherly love, but to more and more chaos. The point is that I would never think of the phrase for which the translation was asked as having anything to do with race at all.
philgoddard Jul 27, 2022:
That's possibly because Carmenza has omitted to provide the context.
Barbara Cochran, MFA Jul 26, 2022:
Interesting How this question has been interpreted in 3 different ways: as a psychological concept, as part of the business world, and from a racial perspective.

Don't let pride be your guide

Or "don't let pride guide you".

Unfortunately, the asker hasn't given any context, but this approach could also work in the right setting.

Pride cometh before a fall.

The more your ego is puffed up with pride, the harder it will be to cope with a fall from grace, so to speak, which might come about because of that very characteristic of your personality. It is a "bad counselor" because exhibiting too much of it can damage your public image, something that can alienate others. And because of that, you might end up in one or more kinds of diminished states.

Pride is a poor counselor

Ethnic pride is a poor counselor both to blacks and whites. I do not claim that we whites actually invented all things. Actually, the opposite seems to be the actual case ...
