From a documentary on rock and roll. In the sequence below it's the same person speaking all the way through. He is an ex musician and is talking to a younger artist who claims to be a great fan of his and to have learnt a lot from him.

How can I translate the last subtitle? I cannot establish what the exact meaning of picking is in this context.
