Spanish term

Violencia de género/Gender violence

Spanish to English Law/Patents Law (general)
I am translating some documents for the police here in Spain.

In them, they use the term 'violencia de género' (literally 'gender violence'). This is a relatively new term in Spain, displacing the previously usual term 'violencia doméstica' ('domestic violence'), and there is still a lot of debate about which of these two (or possibly some third alternative) is preferable.

So, my question to those of you who live in the British Isles is 'Is the term 'gender violence' a familiar one over there, used in the media, public policy documents, etc.?' Or would it be confusing? Is 'domestic violence' still the most normal term? Or is there some other term that has completely escaped my radar?

Thanks in advance.

gender-based violence

The WHO uses "gender-based violence" or "violence against women":

It is also used by the Times newspaper:

Here is an interesting article about what gender-based violence really is, written by Human Rights Watch. Note that it can refer to both men and women, so depending on your context you may prefer "violence against women":

Thanks Rebecca - I'd googled myself to confirm that the term actually existed in English, but wanted confirmation from someone 'on the ground' that it didn't sound strange to British ears.

Note from asker:
'Domestic Violence' is certainly the first phrase that springs to my mind. It looks as if the situation is in fact very similar in the UK and Spain, with both terms currently in use.
Peer comment(s):

agree Mark Solomon : I have never heard of 'gender-based violence' and it sounds completely ridiculous to my British ears ! It sounds more like an Americanism to me, and I would stick with 'good old old-fashioned domestic violence' !

(term borrowed from English)

According to the RAE, "violencia de género" is a term borrowed from English ("gender-based violence") and not the other way around. In current usage, the Spanish government presently distinguishes "violencia de género" or "violencia contra la mujer" (violence against women specifically), reserving "violencia doméstica" for all types of violence "en el ámbito familiar."

INFORME DE LA REAL ACADEMIA ESPAÑOLA SOBRE LA
EXPRESIÓN VIOLENCIA DE GÉNERO

Thanks. I should have suspected this myself, as many new coinings like this are calques from English.
