Discussion

Michał Wiśniewski Aug 22, 2006:
again in the right ballpark. Incidentally, Syco in sycophancy comes from gr. sykon, which meant 'fig' but also female organs. So I think Carol hit on something that doesn't necessarily mean more than 'hetero-fancy' but carries many more connotations
Michał Wiśniewski Aug 22, 2006:
Re: heterophancy - With ph it sounds to me a bit like a perversion (things with 'philia' and 'phagia'). It appears in sycophancy, where 'lizusostwo' may also evoke some correct associations. Phancy in sycoph. comes from gr. phanein - to show,

Michał, nie analizuj;)

Czy jest to zachcianka dla kogoś kto ją ma typowa, czy raczej w ramach wyjątku :) ?

heterofancy/heterophancy

Gives it a double meaning - and possibly the second spelling gives it not just the double meaning, but also an pseudo-scientific aura . . . ?

Another suggestion, anyway :-)

It's just a visual/phonetic game - 'ph' as in the phoneme /f/ - a pretentious way of writing 'fancy' to give it a kind of pseudo-scientific feel.

However (to be scientific about it ! ):

'phantasy: var. of FANTASY syn see FANCY'
'fancy': [ME fantsy, contr. of fantasie . . . . fr. LL phantasia . . .]
'phantasm or fantasm: 1. a product of phantasy . . . '
(Webster's Third New International Dictionary)

So, the meaning is different (hence the 'pseudo-scientific' thing), but the word exists!

And there are so many 'ph' = /f/ words in science . . .

That's all, really . . . :-/

bo hetero to straight - ale musisz skonsultować z jakimś native'em - może na Eng-Eng?

a może i iść dalej i stworzyć neologizm - straightantasia... kontekst by się zdał...
