Spanish term

levada

Spanish to English Other Geography
Hello. Some kind of geographical feature, presumably, from an article about Madeira. I can't find any suitable definitions in my dictionaries, nor on the RAE website:

"Cascadas de agua, levadas, precipicios muy abruptos, verdes montañas, exuberante flora y fauna, paisajes muy verdes y húmedos..."

Thanks for your help :)

levadas/irrigation channels/aqueducts

Several tourism websites in English refer to these as "levadas":

"The earliest settlers on Madeira began cultivating the lower slopes in the south of the island, cutting out terraces (‘poios’ in Portuguese). Working with contractors (who sometimes used slave or convict labour), they built the first small ‘levadas’, which carried water from springs higher up the mountainsides to irrigate their lands. These narrow watercourses plummet downhill, rushing and frothing with energy; their banks are often festooned with wild flowers."

""Levada" is a Portuguese word derived from the word "levar" - which means to carry and is roughly translated as "carriageway", but more correctly defined as mini-canal. The mini-canals are irrigation systems developed to distribute water from the rainfall heavy and wet regions on the north of the island to the drier sun parched regions of the south. The water is usually stored in reservoirs or tanks, or captured directly from natural fountains to be redirected and channeled across a wide network of winding canals. These narrow water carriageways deliver precious water along far distances to banana plantations, vineyards, fruit orchards and vegetable gardens, as well as to hydro-electric power stations dotted around the island. The levadas cover a total distance of 2500 km, and date back to as far as the early 16th century."

And from Wikipedia:
"The island of Madeira is wet in the northwest but dry in the southeast. In the 16th century the Portuguese started building levadas (aqueducts) to carry water to the agricultural regions. There are over 1350 miles of levadas including 25 miles of tunnels and they provide a remarkable network of walking paths.

Two of the most popular levadas to hike are the Levada do Caldeiro Verde and the Levada Caldeirão do Inferno which should not be attempted by hikers prone to vertigo or without torches and helmets. The Levada do Caniçal is a much easier walk, running 7.1 miles from Maroços to the Caniçal Tunnel. It is known as the mimosa levada because mimosa trees are found all along the route."
