"Authenticate" is most suited to literary works or works of art.
Tahqeeq is normally done in cases where there are various manuscripts of a book, and it is not uncommon to find that some bits of infomation are missing in the different manuscripts, and thus Tahqeeq brings authenticity to the text of the book by cross-checking them.
