Spanish term

algas esciáfilas de modo calmo

From the above, it would sem that these are shade algae, but is there a more "scientific" term in English and what does the calmo mean?

Any help greatly appreciated

Discussion

Neil Ashby Feb 24, 2015:
On second thoughts.... Although it could be as Neil suggests, areas of low plant abundance (hence the significant decrease in O2 caused by the algal bloom, compared to abundant areas where the bloom has relatively little effect on O2 levels)....I think I'll check with the author.
Neil Ashby Feb 24, 2015:
@ Neil and anyone who's interested.... RE: "de modo calmo"
I have the same expression, but I think from my context "de modo calmo" does mean "calm waters":
I interpret from my text that "de modo calmo" refers to "calm waters" which neither distribute the bloom nor rejuvenate O2 in the water.
If, in my case, it meant "zones nearly bereft of life", then the presence of the harmful algal blooms wouldn't be a point of interest.

Floristic survey of Ectocarpales, Chordariales, Scytosiphonales and Sphacelariales (Phaeophyta) from the coast of Santa Catarina State, Brazil). The studied plants were collected in collecting 19 sites, during the period from 1991 to 1994, in all seasons of the year. The collections were restricted to the intertidal region, in rocky anchorages, including wave-exposed, moderately exposed and wave-sheltered sites. 14 infrageneric taxa were identified, of which two represented new references for southern Brazil: Asteronema rhodochortonoides (Børgesen) D.G. Müller & Parodi and Rosenvingea sanctae-crucis Børgesen. For each
taxon, we present ecological comments, occurrence, reproductive phases, taxonomic discussions and illustrations. The descriptions were given only for taxa with few or no citations for the southern Brazilian coast, and dichotomical keys of identification were presented for the genera and species.

I don't know. I don't think "modo calmo" = calm waters, from the definition on the Brazilian site..but I am not an expert on algae.

shade algae (Sciaphila)

"modo calmo" refers to the fact that they grow where there is no (other) abundant plant life, I don't know if there's an Eng equivalent.

"Sciaphila" is the genus, "sciaphilic" the adjective.
