Discussion

Susan Zimmer Aug 22, 2007:
Lurch is probably the butler from the Addams Family, he is depicted as a "shadow figure". I'm sure one of the family members probably said "Don't stand in my shadow, Lurch!" at some point or other, but I can't find a reference...

correction: forgot the "s" in shadows

stand in the shadows.

If Lurch* is a name then it would be:
"Don't stand in my shadow, Lurch!"

"You could stand in my shadow and you still couldn't see me here"
ww.ohhla.com/anonymous/dj_magic/rep/rep.mke.txt

"Dont you stand in my shadow cause when you do I take it personal"

"Millions can relate to standing in someone else's shadow and never getting credit or the opportunity to come out into their own."
http://www.melinda-doolittle.biz/

This phrase can be taken positively or negatively.

...to stand in someone's shadow can mean not being noticed, hiding, not coming into their own light, lacking the confidence to come out on one's own, riding on someone else's coattails, lurking in the background, hanging on and not letting go....etc.

* Lurch = amphibian ?? therefore, it probably is a name....or the person who is saying, "Don't stand in my shadow" thinks the person they're saying it to is like an amphibian....cold blooded. ;-)
Note from asker:
It also translates into amphibian, which fis the context.

Do not stand in my light or Do not block my light.

This has always been my understanding, but . . .
