Spanish term

sinsombrerismo

Spanish to English Other Textiles / Clothing / Fashion
From the history of a hat company

Eran años de esplendor para tan codiciado accesorio entre nuestros abuelos pero la llegada del movimiento sin sombrerismo, años 20-30, sumergió al sector en una grave crisis que hizo que la gente colgara los sombreros en el perchero

So this was a fashion for not wearing hats after a golden age, but any ideas of a neat way of putting it, sartorial proz'ers? No google joy with "hatless movement" which I guess will do as a last resort

get your thinking sombreros on :o)

Discussion

William Pairman (asker) Jan 3, 2008:
Thought I might use this - "...the so-called sinsombrerismo movement in the 1920s and 30s, in which the fashion was for going hatless"

hat-hater (movement)

As far as I recall from what my grand-father told me (I'm too young to remember that ;) the "sinsombrerismo" was not so much that hats went out of fashion but rather a kind of radical movement against the use of hats, as a kind of rebellion against the established order. Note that in those years there was also a lot of political agitation, both from the left and anarchist parties, and the "no-hat-on" was not only a sign of rebellion but also a political statement...

BTW, "hatless movement",as you propose, will IMHO also do....

agree Andy Watkinson : "but also a political statement".... later taken advantage of by the Franquistas: a saber, "los rojos no llevaban sombrero". To the asker: this is as much a political reference as a fashion statement.

Thank you, Andy, and you are right about the Franquistas statement, I still recall that...
agree littleflorecita : I agree with this political statement, not just the fact that they didn't have hats, but the deep meaning of doing so. Just like when women started wearing trousers/pants!

Thank you, littleflorecita. But note that woman wearing trousers/pats was also a political statemeng... immediately thereafter they started asking for the right to vote! ;)

Retro: I've only heard of this being applied to the '50s.
Maybe you could use fad as well?
Just some ideas, anyhow.

The firm has been one of the great names of British hat making for almost as long. Indeed, it prospered, and in the heyday of hat-wearing, in the late 1800s, the Christy factory in Stockport in northern England extended over twelve acres and had more than 3,000 employees.

bareheadedness

the move towards bareheadedness (or bare-headedness) or the movement (if there was one) for bareheadedness

If anything makes a hatmaker's hair stand on end, it is a man who does not wear a hat—especially if he is the President of the U.S. Last week, fearing the national impact of John F. Kennedy's usual hatlessness, the hat industry set out to rescue the nation's impressionable young men (and itself) from the perils of bareheadedness. In an eye-catching, full-page ad in the New York Times appeared a huge portrait of a beatnik so snaggy—and hatless—that no rising young man could afford to look anything like him.

the movement against wearing hats

i think the concept of there being a movement or a new "moda" of not wearing hats needs to be conveyed. Some google hits indicate "sin sombrerismo" was an actual movement or fashion in and of itself, not simply people gradually abandoning the tradition of wearing hats
