English term

back in the day

English to Spanish Art/Literary General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters an expression
"Back in the day it served as a fortress with a watchtower to warn against pirates"

No estoy segura de si esta expresión indica "en aquellos días" (por lo tanto, estrictamente en el siglo XIV cuando se construyó) o "en el pasado" o si tenemos un equivalente algo más colorido en español. ¡Gracias!
Es para España.

No point in getting into a grammatical argument since it's Leticia's translation which we are trying to sort out!
Sergio Lahaye (X) Jan 29, 2008:
the grammar is correct. the time is mentioned. back in the day refers to the days of pirates. I gave a class on something similar to this last night. you could translate it as ´en su epoca´
Noni Gilbert Riley Jan 29, 2008:
... I'm inclined towards reading it as "back in those days". Nothing new to find a less than perfect original and certainly nothing to lose sleep over. Q frankly I think all the options currently up are great!
Noni Gilbert Riley Jan 29, 2008:
OK, so the original is grammatically "relaxed", hence your quandary. If it shd read "back in those days", then it means in XIVth C, but if it shd read "back in the days when", then it means at a later date, but that wd mean that the sentence is incomplete
Leticia Klemetz, CT (asker) Jan 29, 2008:
Full fragment "Beautiful churches are found throughout the island. The Church of Sant Antoni, a short westward drive from Ibiza Town, is a stunning 14th century church that replaced a mosque from the time of the Arabs, when Christians reconquered the island. Back in the day it served as a fortress with a watchtower to warn against pirates. The Church of Santa Eularia is another..." Thanks!
Noni Gilbert Riley Jan 29, 2008:
Is that the complete sentence or does it go on? Strictly speaking, it should go on, since back in the day = when, as Elizabeth points out.

En su día

Creo que se refiere a cuando se construyó, como tú dices.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Hubo piratas hasta siglos más tarde, así que prefiero esta opción, que deja abierto el marco temporal. Me encanta "antaño" pero lamentablemente ha caído en desuso... (qué triste) ¡Gracias a todos por las multiples opciones! ¡Que paséis un buen miércoles!"

En su epoca servía de fortaleza con una torre para alertar sobre piratas

en la epoca... sería en la epoca de piratas. Esto podría ser desde que se construyó, o más tarde.
