German term

Gasthörer

German to English Social Sciences Education / Pedagogy
As you will know, this term describes (usually older) people who attend university lectures to listen but do not do the exams or acquire student status.
Suggestions I have found on the Internet include 'guest listeners', 'continuing education students', 'observers', 'auditors' and 'guest students' but none of these seem to fit the bill 100%.
Isn't there some Latin term used in English for this (similar to the use of ab initio and ad hoc for example)....?
Thank you for any suggestion you may have!

Guest students

I have heard the term 'guest students' used a lot but I'm not sure if there is a 'proper' term for this

FREEDIC.NET suggests the following:

der Gasthörer auditor (American)
extramural student
guest student

I guess it depends on whether you want US or UK English
